Layer-by-layer assembly of lysozyme with iota-carrageenan and gum Arabic for surface modification of food packaging materials with improved barrier properties

Nazan Koca et al.

Summary: This study aimed to modify the surface of biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) by layer-by-layer assembly of lysozyme (LZ) with two different polysaccharides for food packaging. The effects of solution pH, adsorption time, and elimination of intermediate drying steps were investigated. The modified film showed reduction in oxygen transmission rate (OTR) and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) by 66.15% and 28%, respectively.

Biobased films of nanocellulose and mango leaf extract for active food packaging: Supercritical impregnation versus solvent casting

Cristina Cejudo Bastante et al.

Summary: In this study, antioxidant and antimicrobial free-standing films were produced using nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) and mango leaf extract (MLE) via supercritical solvent impregnation (SSI) and conventional solvent casting film-processing methodologies. The films fabricated by CO2-assisted impregnation of MLE into NFC showed higher antioxidant and antimicrobial activities compared to those prepared by solvent casting. These findings demonstrate the potential of NFC/MLE films as sustainable active food packaging materials with UV-blocking, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties.
