Valorization of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Plastic Wastes as Nanofibrous Membranes for Oil Removal: Sustainable Solution for Plastic Waste and Oil Pollution

Fuat Topuz et al.

Summary: The accumulation of plastic wastes has become a global issue, and upcycling them for environmental applications has gained significant research interest. This study focuses on the valorization of PET plastic wastes to produce nanofibrous adsorptive membranes for oil removal. The results show that these membranes have high flexibility, strong sorption capacities, and can be recycled multiple times.

Chemical Recycling of Polyolefins Waste Materials Using Supercritical Water

Maja Colnik et al.

Summary: The hydrothermal degradation of polypropylene waste using supercritical water was studied, and high yields of oil and gas phases were obtained. The oil phase consisted of alkanes, alkenes, cycloalkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, and alcohols. The higher heating values of the oil phase indicated its potential use as liquid fuel.

Polymer waste surgical masks decorated by superhydrophobic metal-organic frameworks towards oil spills clean-up

Olga Guselnikova et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in the production of polymer medical disposals, particularly the polypropylene (PP) ones. Burning these disposals, such as surgical masks and hospital sheets, results in large carbon footprints. This study presents an alternative approach of functional recycling, where waste PP is converted into oil spill sorbents. The prepared materials, PP-MAF6, exhibit high adsorption capacity and efficiency for various oils, including diesel fuel.
