Remote Sensing of Precipitation Using Reflected GNSS Signals: Response Analysis of Polarimetric Observations

Milad Asgarimehr et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of rain on global navigation satellite system reflectometry (GNSS-R) for the first time. Rain is found to affect surface roughness and salinity, showing a systematic relationship. LHCP observations demonstrate higher sensitivity to rain, and reflective measurements provide information on surface height and salinity.

Assessment of tissue pathology using optical polarimetry

Zahra Ali et al.

Summary: The study collected and summarized a large number of research on the polarimetric signatures of different tissue pathologies, finding that cancer is the most common pathological type. Although differences in polarimetric signatures of different tissue pathologies were summarized, generalization of the results was hindered by the presentation of data in a non-uniform format.

Polarization-Based Histopathology Classification of Ex Vivo Colon Samples Supported by Machine Learning

Deyan Ivanov et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the evaluation of a polarimetric model for colon cancer assessment using tissue polarimetry. Multiple Mueller matrices were recorded for colon specimens, and machine learning algorithms were used to extract features and classify tumors based on the best polarimetric quantities. The results showed the potential of tissue polarimetry in tumor detection.

Polarimetry-inspired feature fusion spectroscopy (PIFFS) for ammonia sensing in water

Axin Fan et al.

Summary: This work proposes a polarimetry-inspired feature fusion spectroscopy (PIFFS) method to detect ammonia in water. The method modulates the polarization of light by adjusting the components in the optical path and calculates the Stokes parameters of the target light for ammonia detection. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of this method in classifying ammonia concentration.

Subaru/IRCS L-band spectro-polarimetry of the HD 142527 disk scattered light

Mitsuhiko Honda et al.

Summary: Spatially resolved L-band spectro-polarimetric observations were conducted on the protoplanetary disk around HD 142527. The study revealed no significant polarization in the central region, while the scattered light from the disk showed linear polarization. By comparing model predictions, the grain properties of the disk region were estimated to be consistent with previous findings.

Automatic pseudo-coloring approaches to improve visual perception and contrast in polarimetric images of biological tissues

Carla Rodriguez et al.

Summary: Imaging polarimetry methods have been proven effective in enhancing image contrast between tissues and structures in organic samples, and revealing structures hidden in regular intensity images. However, previous pseudo-colored images based on polarimetry were suboptimal. In this study, two new pseudo-colored methods based on Euclidean distances and likelihood for each pixel were proposed and experimentally validated on four different biological samples, demonstrating their potential in biomedical and botanical applications.

Polarimetric imaging microscopy for advanced inspection of vegetal tissues

Albert Van Eeckhout et al.

Summary: Polarimetric microscopy is a mature technique in biophotonics, but is not commonly used in botany, with only specific observables like birefringence being utilized. A study on using polarimetric microscopy for plant inspection shows its potential advantages compared to standard techniques, highlighting its non-destructive nature, cost-effectiveness, and time efficiency.

Embossed topographic depolarisation maps of biological tissues with different morphological structures

Volodimir A. Ushenko et al.

Summary: The polarisation-holographic Mueller matrix method is used to create layered topographic maps of depolarisation from diffuse biological tissues. Histological sections of myocardial and liver tissue are successfully mapped, revealing differences in scattering multiplicity with increasing phase due to different biological structures. This study demonstrates the potential for using this method in disease diagnosis by assessing the 3D morphology of biological tissues.

Volodymyr A. Ushenko et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the use of a 3D Mueller matrix method for differentiating between benign and malignant prostate tumour tissues, achieving high accuracy in categorizing adenoma and carcinoma, as well as in distinguishing between different grades of carcinoma. This research represents a promising approach for clinical analysis and diagnosis of prostate tumours using Mueller matrix mapping of depolarisation distribution.

Omar Rodriguez-Nunez et al.

Summary: The authors suggest using wide-field imaging Mueller polarimetry to contrast optically anisotropic fiber tracts of healthy brain white matter for the detection of brain tumor borders during neurosurgery. Previous studies have shown that this polarimetric imaging modality can accurately detect the in-plane orientation of brain white matter fiber tracts in reflection geometry.
