Representing plant diversity in land models: An evolutionary approach to make Functional Types more functional

Leander D. L. Anderegg et al.

Summary: Plants play a critical role in mediating terrestrial mass and energy fluxes, and their traits have significant impacts on climate, biodiversity, and hydrology. However, current Earth System Models often oversimplify plant diversity and fail to capture ecological dynamics. This study proposes an evolution-based functional type approach to represent and study plant diversity in models, by considering the evolutionary relatedness of plant lineages. This approach has the potential to improve parameterization, process representation, and model benchmarking in next-generation Earth System Models.

Ecosystem-scale biogeochemical fluxes from three bioenergy crop candidates: How energy sorghum compares to maize and miscanthus

Caitlin E. Moore et al.

Summary: This study compared the ecosystem-scale C, N, water, and energy fluxes of energy sorghum, maize, and miscanthus during a typical growing season in the Midwest United States. Maize had the highest gross primary productivity and evapotranspiration, while energy sorghum was the most efficient water user. Nitrous oxide flux was higher from maize and energy sorghum compared to miscanthus, reflecting their different agronomic management practices.

Summary: The study conducted simulations over the CONUS using different configurations of CLM, showing that CLM5 has improved capabilities in capturing terrestrial biogeochemical dynamics, but still exhibits biases in simulating vegetation phenology and hydrological parameters, requiring further optimization.

Improving the representation of cropland sites in the Community Land Model (CLM) version 5.0

Summary: Incorporating a comprehensive crop module in land surface models allows for studying the impact of agricultural land use changes on various cycles. The study evaluated the crop module of CLM5 at a point scale with field data, focusing on crop growth simulations and found significant improvement in energy fluxes, LAI, and crop yield. Modifications including winter wheat subroutines and crop-specific parameters led to better representation of field conditions and improved model simulations for regional yield predictions.
