In-situ assessment of background gamma radiation dose levels in outdoor environment of Enugu urban areas, Enugu state, Nigeria

Fredrick Oghenebrorie Ugbede et al.

Summary: This study conducted in-situ measurements of absorbed dose rates of background gamma radiation in various outdoor locations within Enugu urban areas. The results showed significantly higher radiation dose rates compared to the world average, indicating a radiation contaminated environment. The estimated annual effective dose and excess lifetime cancer risk values suggest that long-term exposure to low-level radiation in Enugu urban areas may lead to cancer development.

Quantification of smelter-derived contributions to thallium contamination in river sediments: Novel insights from thallium isotope evidence

Juan Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the enrichment patterns and isotopic compositions of Thallium (Tl) in sediment profiles from a recipient river in South China, showing that Tl contamination was mainly contributed by smelting wastes, based on a ternary mixing model for quantifying relative Tl contributions. Thallium isotopes can be used as powerful proxies for quantitatively identifying potential different contributors in the environment.

Uptake, organ distribution and health risk assessment of potentially toxic elements in crops in abandoned indigenous smelting region

Jin Wang et al.

Summary: This study examined the content, transfer pathways, and potential risks of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in common crops from different farmlands surrounding an indigenous Zn-smelting area in Guizhou, China. The results showed that cabbage and radish at some sites had thallium (Tl) levels exceeding the maximum permissible level for food, while the edible portion of maize was not prone to Tl risk.

Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies: Biological Effects, Countermeasures and Biodosimetry

Elena Obrador et al.

Summary: Atomic and radiological crises can be caused by accidents, military activities, terrorist assaults, and the utilization of radiation exposure devices. Direct damage from radiation occurs through cellular interactions, while indirect effects result from reactive oxygen species generated by radiolysis of water molecules. Countermeasures for such crises should consider radiation type, affected individuals, dose range, and extent of exposure or contamination. Medical countermeasures, biodosimetry techniques, and response strategies are important in managing accidental radiation exposure.

Emerging risks of toxic metal(loid)s in soil-vegetables influenced by steel-making activities and isotopic source apportionment

Jin Wang et al.

Summary: Industrial activities can lead to contamination by toxic elements in nearby agricultural lands, posing health risks especially for children. Remediation measures are needed to reduce contamination and ensure food safety. Further research is required on the sources, pollution levels, and health risks associated with elements like Tl, As, and Pb in vegetables.

Determination of primordial radionuclide concentrations in UAE groundwater using high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometry

Rahaf Ajaj et al.

Summary: Groundwater in the UAE, being a valuable resource in arid regions, was found through gamma spectroscopy analysis to have natural radionuclide concentrations below the recommended limits by the WHO. The absorbed dose rates and annual effective dose rates were also within acceptable ranges, indicating no significant health risks to the public from exposure to these radioactive materials.

Ocean-Floor Sediments as a Resource of Rare Earth Elements: An Overview of Recently Studied Sites

Jelena Milinovic et al.

Summary: Rare earth elements are of particular interest due to their applications in modern communications, renewable energy generation, and transport electrification, but their supply security is at risk. Diversification of supply is needed as reliance on one supplier poses a threat. Studies have shown high concentrations of various REEs in ocean-floor sediments, presenting them as potential resources, yet the economic cost and environmental impacts of deep-sea mining need to be considered.
