The association of sleep disturbances with burning mouth syndrome: An overlooked relationship-A qualitative systematic review

Fatmah Alhendi et al.

Summary: This systematic review examined the association between burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and sleep disturbances. The findings indicate that BMS is associated with poor sleep quality, longer time to fall asleep, reduced sleep efficiency, and impaired daytime function.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 35 cohort studies and found that pain, including headache, migraine, tension-type headache, widespread pain, and irritable bowel syndrome, is a risk factor for subsequent cognitive decline or dementia.

Sexual desire, mood disorders and sleep disturbances in female BMS patients: A controlled study

Stefania Leuci et al.

Summary: A case-control study was conducted on 50 women with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and 50 healthy controls. Results showed BMS patients had higher scores in pain, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and lower sexual desire compared to healthy controls. The study also found a correlation between BMS and low sexual desire, along with common symptoms of anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances in BMS patients.

Recent advances in the understanding of the aetiology and therapeutic strategies in burning mouth syndrome: Focus on the actions of cannabinoids

Sonia R. Pereira et al.

Summary: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a neuropathic pain disorder characterized by a burning sensation on oral mucosal surfaces, along with xerostomia, dysgeusia, and tingling or paraesthetic sensations. The classification of the disorder has posed a diagnostic challenge for clinicians/dentists. Recent research has provided insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms and therapeutic strategies for BMS, but controlled clinical studies are needed to support the effectiveness of these approaches. The potential of cannabis-based therapeutics in managing BMS patients is also explored.

Worldwide prevalence estimates of burning mouth syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Shuangshuang Wu et al.

Summary: Burning mouth syndrome has a relatively high prevalence worldwide, with the highest prevalence in Europe. Females and individuals over 50 years old are more susceptible to this syndrome. Additional epidemiological surveys are needed to further understand the prevalence of burning mouth syndrome.

The use of self-report questionnaires in an analysis of the multidimensional aspects of pain and a correlation with the psychological profile and quality of life in patients with burning mouth syndrome: A case-control study

Federica Canfora et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the multidimensional aspects of pain in Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) and analyze its relationship with mood disorders, sleep, and quality of life. The results showed that BMS patients had significantly higher pain scores and disease-related scores compared to healthy controls. There was a linear correlation between pain and disease onset. The study suggested that a comprehensive analysis of BMS patients requires multiple tools to better understand the multidimensional aspects of pain.

White matter hyperintensities in Burning Mouth Syndrome assessed according to the Age-Related White Matter Changes scale

Daniela Adamo et al.

Summary: This study investigated white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) in Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) patients, finding that patients with BMS had higher ARWMCs scores compared to healthy controls. Factors such as age, lower education level, unemployment, essential hypertension, and hypercholesterolemia were correlated with higher total scores on the ARWMCs. The presence of WMHs in BMS patients may have implications for the disease's pathophysiology and pain perception.

Burning Fog: Cognitive Impairment in Burning Mouth Syndrome

Federica Canfora et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the prevalence of cognitive impairment in patients with burning mouth syndrome and evaluate its relationship with potential predictors such as pain, mood disorders, blood biomarkers, and white matter changes. Patients with BMS showed impairments in most cognitive domains compared to controls, with higher frequencies of white matter changes in the temporal lobes. Early identification of cognitive impairment and associated factors may help clinicians in addressing potential risks for developing neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.
