Eco-Anxiety: A Cascade of Fundamental Existential Anxieties

Holli-Anne Passmore et al.

Summary: Eco-anxiety is the persistent feeling of anxiety about the degradation of our natural environment. It engenders existential anxieties about identity, happiness, meaning, death, freedom, and isolation. Our happiness is affected by reduced opportunities to engage with thriving ecosystems, and the degradation of landscapes and ecosystems diminishes our sense of coherence and meaning in life.

Effects of Nature (Greenspace) on Cognitive Functioning in School Children and Adolescents: a Systematic Review

Dianne A. Vella-Brodrick et al.

Summary: There is growing interest in understanding the influence of natural environments on learning in school contexts. This paper presents a systematic review of studies examining the effects of nature interventions on the cognitive functioning of young people aged 5 to 18 years. The results provide substantial support for the cognitive benefits of nature interventions, including improvements in selective attention, sustained attention, and working memory. The underlying mechanisms for these benefits, such as enhanced wellbeing, cognitive restoration, and stress reduction, were also explored. The findings suggest that providing opportunities for young people to connect with nature, particularly in educational settings, can enhance their cognitive functioning.

Summary: Positive psychology has been criticized for its Western-centric perspective, therefore the researcher has been working on creating a lexicon of 'untranslatable' words to broaden the understanding of wellbeing across different cultures. Initial analysis identified six main categories, with over 1,400 additional words added to date. Six more categories were also identified, further enhancing the conceptual map in positive psychology.

The lasting impacts of outdoor adventure residential experiences on young people

Heather E. Prince

Summary: Evidence from four retrospective empirical research studies on lasting impacts (>12 months) of outdoor residential experiences for young people in the UK since 2015 suggests that these experiences can have lasting effects on young people's self-confidence, independence, and communication skills. Additionally, these experiences can also lead to positive impacts such as increased confidence, teamwork, and life skills, as well as opening up new opportunities and activities for young people. The intensity and challenge of outdoor adventure residentials, as well as the power of group dynamics, are factors that influence these lasting impacts.
