Assessment of Physicochemical, Microbiological and Toxicological Hazards at an Illegal Landfill in Central Poland

Justyna Szulc et al.

Summary: This study assessed the hazards at an illegal landfill in central Poland, finding high levels of bacteria and fungi, some of which pose potential risks to human health. Additionally, various harmful compounds were detected in the soil and leachate samples, indicating the emission of particulate matter, microorganisms, and cyto/genotoxic compounds from the landfill.

Scenario Analysis of Air Quality Improvement in Warsaw, Poland, by the End of the Current Decade

Piotr Holnicki et al.

Summary: The air quality in the Warsaw conurbation, like many other large European cities, poses a serious threat to residents' health and is a significant cause of premature mortality. Local heating installations and car traffic are the main sources of pollution, with NOx, PM10, PM2.5, and BaP being the dominant pollutants. The city authorities have taken measures to reduce carbon emissions from heating installations and modernize the vehicle fleet, which could lead to a significant improvement in air quality. The paper focuses on quantitatively assessing the expected air quality improvement by 2030, with a projected reduction in population exposure of 28-30% for NOx and PM, along with a corresponding decrease in avoidable deaths.

Post-Occupancy Evaluation's (POE) Applications for Improving Indoor Environment Quality (IEQ)

Francesco Lolli et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze and compare recent literature on the application of post-occupancy evaluation (POE) methodology. It provides a comprehensive assessment of the main factors that contribute to indoor environmental quality (IEQ) through qualitative and quantitative analysis. The results highlight common approaches in conducting POE studies and identify the factors that significantly influence the determination of good indoor environmental quality.

MOLECULAR IDENTIFICATION OF MICROBIAL CONTAMINATIONS IN THE FITNESS CENTER IN MAKKAH REGION

Mustafa Abdalhalim Turkstani et al.

Summary: With the increasing focus on maintaining health, more people are planning to join fitness centers or gyms. A study conducted in a popular fitness center in Makkah, Saudi Arabia revealed the presence of various types of bacteria with some showing antibiotic resistance. Regular monitoring of microbial contamination in gym facilities is essential to ensure the health and safety of individuals.

Cellulosimicrobium fucosivorans sp. nov., isolated from San Elijo Lagoon, contains a fucose metabolic pathway linked to carotenoid production

Fabiola A. Aviles et al.

Summary: Cellulosimicrobium strain SE3(T) was isolated from the San Elijo coastal lagoon near San Diego. It belongs to a novel species named Cellulosimicrobium fucosivorans sp. nov., which has a unique alpha-l-fucosidase and a metabolic pathway related to l-fucose. The ability to metabolize fucose and produce carotenoids provides a competitive advantage for C. fucosivorans in sunny coastal lagoon areas.

Investigation and disinfection of bacteria and fungi in sports fitness center

Nonglak Boonrattanakij et al.

Summary: This study examined the improvement of air quality in a fitness center's exercise room under normal operating conditions, focusing on bacterial and fungal contamination. Chlorine dioxide and weak acid hypochlorous water aerosols were found to be more effective in removing bacteria and fungi than water scrubbing, with a 15-minute contact time sufficient to meet air quality standards. User density and carbon dioxide levels had a significant impact on the disinfection performance of bacteria and fungi, while temperature specifically affected fungi disinfection.
