HiFiAdapterFilt, a memory efficient read processing pipeline, prevents occurrence of adapter sequence in PacBio HiFi reads and their negative impacts on genome assembly

Sheina B. Sim et al.

Summary: Analysis of publicly available HiFi datasets showed the necessity of a read-sanitation step to remove sequence artifacts from PacBio library preparation to prevent adapter contamination in assemblies. The study presented HiFiAdapterFilt as a simple and memory efficient solution for this issue.

Chromosome-level genome assembly reveals genomic architecture of northern range expansion in the mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

Christopher Keeling et al.

Summary: Advancements in genome sequencing methods and assembly tools have significantly improved the contiguity and gap reduction in insect genome assemblies since the draft genome assemblies of the mountain pine beetle were published in 2013. The new assemblies have greatly increased contiguity, with 90% of the content now contained in 12 and 11 scaffolds for the female and male assemblies, respectively. Analysis of two chromosome regions revealed significant differentiation between northern and southern Canadian populations.

The oral secretion from Cotton Boll Weevil (Anthonomus grandis) induces defense responses in cotton (Gossypium spp) and Arabidopsis thaliana

Stefanie Menezes de Moura et al.

Summary: This study investigates the molecular responses of plants to extracts from Cotton Boll Weevil (CBW) and identifies potential signaling pathways activated by CBW extracts. The study also suggests that certain molecular patterns in CBW oral secretions can trigger defense responses in cotton and Arabidopsis. Additionally, the research reveals a distinct signaling cascade likely triggered by CBW oral secretions, supported by observations from Arabidopsis mutants with known receptor and co-receptor complex mutations. This work holds potential for the identification and development of effective pest control methods against CBW infestation.

Midgut Genes Knockdown by Oral dsRNA Administration Produces a Lethal Effect on Cotton Boll Weevil

R. Salvador et al.

Summary: The cotton boll weevil is a key pest in America whose larval stage develops within the cotton flower bud. RNA interference (RNAi) technology has been used to design new control strategies, with some specific dsRNAs causing mortality in both larvae and adults, depending on the targeted gene sequence. The ingestion of dsRNA was found to significantly reduce mRNA levels in the midgut of cotton boll weevil, suggesting potential for further evaluation in control strategies.

The Identification of Boll Weevil, Anthonomus grandis grandis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Genes Involved in Pheromone Production and Pheromone Biosynthesis

Lindsey C. Perkin et al.

Summary: The boll weevil is a destructive pest of commercial cotton in the Americas, and eradication programs have been used to control its populations. Pheromone traps are used for monitoring and control, but their effectiveness is reduced during certain times of the year. By sequencing and comparing pheromone-producing and non-producing weevils, genes involved in pheromone production have been identified, potentially leading to the development of environmentally friendly gene-level pest control strategies specific to the boll weevil.

The Easter Egg Weevil (Pachyrhynchus) genome reveals syntenic patterns in Coleoptera across 200 million years of evolution

Matthew H. Van Dam et al.

Summary: This study examines patterns of genomic architecture across insects and reveals significant differences in gene order decay rates among different insect orders. It demonstrates that genes can stay localized on chromosomes for hundreds of millions of years in beetles, while their order along chromosomes gets completely shuffled over time. Additionally, the study empirically shows that synteny decay rates differ significantly between insect orders, with Lepidoptera not being the sole driver of this pattern.

Anthonomus rubi on Strawberry Fruit: Its Biology, Ecology, Damage, and Control from an IPM Perspective

Lorenzo Tonina et al.

Summary: New damage on fruit caused by the Strawberry Blossom Weevil (SBW) adults has been found in strawberry fields in Trento Province, north-east Italy. Studies on the biology, ecology, monitoring tools, and control methods for SBW were conducted to develop Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies. Yellow or green sticky traps combined with synthetic attractants showed good efficacy in capturing adults, while high temperatures, periodic removal of severed buds or adults, and Chlorpyrifos-methyl application effectively constrained pest population build-up.
