Insight into correlation of advanced nitrogen removal with extracellular polymeric substances characterization in a step-feed three-stage integrated anoxic/oxic biofilter system

Zilong Hou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between EPS and advanced nitrogen removal in a novel biofilter system, showing that EPS plays a key role in enhancing nitrogen removal efficiency. The 2nd anoxic zone was found to be the major contributor to nitrogen removal, with different EPS components playing critical roles. Additionally, the relationship between microbial composition, EPS, and nitrogen removal was clarified.

Effects of oxidizing environment on digestate humification and identification of substances governing the dissolved organic matter (DOM) transformation process

Yingchao Zhang et al.

Summary: The impact of oxygen and/or MnO2 on the production of humic-like acids (HLAs) was investigated in this study. It was found that MnO2 and oxygen synergistically improved the production of HLAs and spectroscopic evidence was used to analyze the corresponding component evolution.

The desorption mechanism of dissolved organic matter on pollutants and the change of biodiversity during sediment dredging

Xing Wan et al.

Summary: Sediment dredging is effective in controlling endogenous pollution in lakes, but little attention has been paid to the desorption mechanism of dissolved organic matter (DOM) on pollutants and the change of biodiversity. This study investigated the physicochemical properties of DOM in sediment and its correlation with the desorption behavior of pollutants and aquatic organism biodiversity, using a sediment dredging project in Dianchi Lake as an example.

Identification of sources, characteristics and photochemical transformations of dissolved organic matter with EEM-PARAFAC in the Wei River of China

Yuanyuan Luo et al.

Summary: The dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the Wei River surface water and sediment originates mainly from microbial metabolic activity and surrounding soil, with different characteristics between the two sources. DOM in the surface water exhibits higher photodegradation potential compared to sediment DOM, with terrestrial humic-like material in water and fulvic-like components in sediment degrading more rapidly according to PARAFAC analysis.

Modified humic acids mediate efficient mineralization in a photo-bio-electro-Fenton process

Han Dai et al.

Summary: This study reported qualitative changes in electron-modified HA and the underlying mechanisms, improving photochemical activity and electron-donating capacity of HA. The novel system achieved mineralization of HA and EE2, a common synthetic estrogen, without the use of hydrogen peroxide. Effluents from the system showed decreased endocrine-disrupting activity, demonstrating a new approach for water treatment using HA.

Zhao Tang et al.

Summary: This review summarized the concentration levels of EE2 in surface waters across 32 countries, with potential estrogenic effects evaluated. Developing countries generally had higher EE2 concentrations in surface waters compared to developed countries, emphasizing the need for further research on different sources contributing to EE2 contamination.
