Lifelong changes of neurotransmitter receptor expression and debilitation of hippocampal synaptic plasticity following early postnatal blindness

Hardy Hagena et al.

Summary: After onset of sensory loss, the cortex and hippocampus undergo extensive reorganization, involving changes in the expression of GABA and glutamate receptors and the debilitation of hippocampal synaptic plasticity. In blind mice, there were reductions in GluN1 subunit expression, persistently altered GluN2A:GluN2B ratio, decreased GABA receptor expression, and altered metabotropic glutamate receptor expression. Hippocampal synaptic plasticity was compromised, but a partial recovery of the early phase of LTP was observed in blind mice at 12 months of age.

The Intriguing Contribution of Hippocampal Long-Term Depression to Spatial Learning and Long-Term Memory

Martin Stacho et al.

Summary: Long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) are cellular mechanisms related to learning and memory. LTD has a specific role in hippocampus-dependent associative learning and information encoding, reducing excitatory synapses and restricting the effects of LTP. It acts in conjunction with LTP to contribute to learning.

The Quest for the Hippocampal Memory Engram: From Theories to Experimental Evidence

Omid Miry et al.

Summary: This review summarizes theories and experimental evidence on hippocampal memory engram formation and function, discussing the latest advances in the field and highlighting the mechanisms of engram allocation. Unanswered questions for future investigations are identified to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of memory formation and retrieval.
