Plasticity in visual cortex is disrupted in a mouse model of tauopathy

Summary: Alzheimer's disease and other dementias impair neural plasticity. This study investigates the impact of tauopathy on visual cortical plasticity and visually evoked behaviors using a transgenic mouse model. The results reveal that both short- and long-term visual plasticity are disrupted in early stages of tauopathy and further reduced in older animals, and visually evoked behaviors are also affected.

An increase in spontaneous activity mediates visual habituation

Summary: Spontaneous activity and its relation to habituation in the cerebral cortex are investigated using two-photon calcium imaging in mouse primary visual cortex. The study shows that an increase in spontaneous activity is correlated with the degree of habituation, and increasing spontaneous activity accelerates habituation. The findings suggest that baseline spontaneous activity can gate incoming sensory information to the cortex based on the learned experience of the animal.

Increased excitatory to inhibitory synaptic ratio in parietal cortex samples from individuals with Alzheimer's disease

Summary: Studies using fluorescence deconvolution tomography and microtransplantation of synaptic membranes revealed significantly elevated E/I ratios in early-onset AD individuals compared to controls, while there was no such change in DS patients. Gene expression research also showed elevated E/I ratios in individuals with AD. These findings suggest a pro-excitatory perturbation of synaptic E/I balance in the parietal cortex of AD patients, contributing to cognitive decline.

Acitretin reverses early functional network degradation in a mouse model of familial Alzheimer's disease

Graph theory shows translational value as a multi-level tool for assessing treatments, exploring mechanisms, and contributing to early diagnosis.
