Structural racism and COVID-19 response: higher risk of exposure drives disparate COVID-19 deaths among Black and Hispanic/Latinx residents of Illinois, USA

Tobias M. Holden et al.

Summary: Structural racism is the root cause of disparities in COVID-19 outcomes among different racial and ethnic groups. In Illinois, Black and Hispanic/Latinx communities have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19 cases and deaths. Although the disparities have diminished since May 2020, they remain more pronounced among younger populations. Considering age, geography, and race/ethnicity can help identify the structural factors driving poorer outcomes for certain groups. Additionally, focusing on reducing inequalities in disease exposure may be more effective in reducing mortality disparities than addressing factors related to case fatality.

Application of Andersen's behavioural model of health services use: a scoping review with a focus on qualitative health services research

Mareike Lederle et al.

Summary: Qualitative methods have become essential in health services research, with Andersen's behavioural model of health services use (BMHSU) being a commonly employed model to explain healthcare utilisation. While the model is primarily used in quantitative research, there are also studies applying it to qualitative research, with some highlighting its usefulness and others critiquing its limitations, such as its lack of consideration for cultural or psychosocial factors.

The health service use of aged rural-to-urban migrant workers in different types of cities in China

Yating Xie et al.

Summary: This study focuses on aged rural migrant workers in China who are 50 years and older and found that those who migrated to the eastern or first- or second-tier cities were less likely to use health services. More attention should be paid to aged migrant workers' use of health services in economically developed regions and cities to reduce healthcare inequality.
