Emergence of multi-drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Niger: A snapshot based on whole-genome sequencing

Zelika Harouna Hamidou et al.

Summary: Tuberculosis is a major public health problem in Niger, and this study provides unprecedented data on the dynamics of tuberculosis transmission and drug resistance in the country. Whole genome sequencing revealed different lineages and sub-lineages of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, with the Euro-American L4 lineage being the most predominant. The majority of isolates showed resistance to multiple drugs, highlighting the urgent need for epidemiological surveillance and effective treatment strategies.

Minimum inhibitory concentration of cycloserine against Mycobacterium tuberculosis using the MGIT 960 system and a proposed critical concentration

Xiao Wu et al.

Summary: The study determined the breakpoint of cycloserine susceptibility in MGIT and described the molecular characteristics of CS-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates. Drug susceptibility testing and whole-genome sequencing revealed that mutations in alr and ald genes were associated with CS resistance. The proportion of CS resistance was higher in extensively drug-resistant TB compared to multidrug-resistant TB.

Distinguishing Relapse From Reinfection With Whole-Genome Sequencing in Recurrent Pulmonary Tuberculosis: A Retrospective Cohort Study in Beijing, China

Jian Du et al.

Summary: The study found that tuberculosis recurrence in Beijing was mainly caused by relapse and strongly associated with underlying chronic diseases. Some MTB isolates from non-diabetic patients had a higher mutation rate, and community transmission was identified in the cohort.
