Synthesis of n-type SnSe polycrystals with high and isotropic thermoelectric performance

Nguyen Viet Chien et al.

Summary: A facile route of synthesizing n-type polycrystalline SnSe with high and isotropic thermoelectric performance is proposed, which involves ball milling, pre-annealing, and spark plasma sintering processes. The pre-annealing process effectively changes the major carrier from hole to electron, increases the crystallinity and grain size of SnSe powder. The addition of SnCl2 enables control of the electron concentration, leading to a remarkable ZT of 0.84-0.86 at 773 K for the n-type polycrystalline SnSe0.92 with 4 wt% SnCl2, regardless of the sintering direction.

Polycrystalline NiSe-Alloyed SnSe with Improved Medium-Temperature Thermoelectric Performance

Yan-Ling Yang et al.

Summary: This study presents a successful fabrication of polycrystalline SnSe material with improved thermoelectric properties through NiSe alloying strategy. The introduction of NiSe-SnSe interfaces filters low-energy carriers and enhances Seebeck coefficient, while the NiSe nano-phases accelerate carrier transport, improving electrical conductivity and power factor. Additionally, NiSe-SnSe interfaces contribute to the reduction of thermal conductivity.

Double charge polarity switching in Sb-doped SnSe for enhanced thermo-electric power generation

Joseph Dona et al.

Summary: The pristine and antimony doped tin selenide (SnSe) samples were prepared by vacuum melting followed by ball milling process. The crystallographic patterns confirmed the formation of orthorhombic SnSe without impurities. The influence of antimony on SnSe was confirmed through Projected Density of States (PDOS) and electron density analysis. Elemental Probe Micro Analyzer (EPMA) technique confirmed the presence and homogeneous distribution of Sn, Se, and Sb elements. HR-TEM micrographs revealed highly crystalline nature of the samples as well as the formation of defects and distinguishable grains and grain boundaries. The thermal conductivity of 10 wt% Sb doped SnSe samples was reduced to 0.55 W/mK at 600 K. Seebeck coefficient analysis disclosed the double charge polarity switching in Sb substituted samples. Thus, the 10 wt% Sb doped SnSe samples achieved a comparable negative Seebeck coefficient with respect to pristine SnSe, which can be a breakthrough in thermoelectric devices.

Synergistic effect of grain boundaries and phonon engineering in Sb substituted Bi2Se3 nanostructures for thermoelectric applications

V. Vijay et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the decoupling of the Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity of antimony substituted bismuth selenide through Isovalent substitution. Transmission electron microscopy studies reveal a giant reduction in thermal conductivity due to multi-scale phonon scattering, primarily caused by a large number of effective dislocations. The ultra-low thermal conductivity achieved in this study highlights the potential of Isovalent substitution for enhancing the Seebeck coefficient and reducing the thermal conductivity of thermoelectric materials.

Layered Tin Chalcogenides SnS and SnSe: Lattice Thermal Conductivity Benchmarks and Thermoelectric Figure of Merit

Summary: Tin sulfide and tin selenide, due to their unique crystal structures, have potential for excellent performance in thermoelectric conversion applications. This study investigates the evolution of thermal conductivity and thermoelectric properties in these materials at different temperatures using first principles methods and a transferable tight-binding potential. It was found that the low thermal conductivity in tin sulfide at higher temperatures is mainly attributed to dynamic phonon softening.

Summary: A series of SnSe/carbon nanotubes composites with homogeneous distribution of CNTs were successfully fabricated by combining solution synthesis with fast sintering. The addition of CNTs significantly improved both the electrical conductivity and power factor, while suppressing the lattice thermal conductivity, leading to enhanced thermoelectric performance. Moreover, the composite exhibited an increased compressive strength due to the presence of CNTs.
