Machine learning-informed and synthetic biology-enabled semi-continuous algal cultivation to unleash renewable fuel productivity

Bin Long et al.

Summary: By designing a semi-continuous algal cultivation system and an aggregation-based sedimentation strategy, the authors successfully overcome the growth limitation caused by mutual shading and the high harvest cost in algal biofuel production. With the help of machine learning, they achieve high levels of biomass and limonene production in photobioreactors.

Review of factors affecting consumer acceptance of cultured meat

Ashkan Pakseresht et al.

Summary: Concerns about animal welfare and sustainable meat production have led to increasing interest in cultured meat as a sustainable alternative. Factors such as public awareness, perceived naturalness, and food-related risk perception influence consumer acceptance/rejection of cultured meat. Ethical and environmental concerns may drive willingness to pay for meat substitutes but may not necessarily extend to cultured meat. Food neophobia and safety concerns are barriers to the adoption of this technology. Availability of alternatives and product features also play a role in consumer reception. Further research on the interrelationships of livestock production, food security, and alternative meat products is recommended.

mSRFR: a machine learning model using microalgal signature features for ncRNA classification

Songtham Anuntakarun et al.

Summary: This study presents mSRFR, a classification tool for noncoding RNAs in microalgae. The tool combines the SMOTE technique to address imbalanced data and the Relief feature selection method to select significant features. The results show that the Random Forest classifier achieves the highest performance and the top selected features reveal a signature feature of microalgal ncRNAs.

Microbial community-based protein production from wastewater for animal feed applications

Ramanujam Srinivasan Vethathirri et al.

Summary: SCP derived from microbial biomass is a promising protein source for animal feed additives. Utilizing nutrient-rich wastewaters for microbial community-based SCP production incurs lower costs compared to traditional methods, yet has received little attention. More research is needed to determine the optimal microbial community composition for SCP production and its relationship with influent food-processing wastewaters.

Role of novel protein sources in sustainably meeting future global requirements

Andrew M. Salter et al.

Summary: Global population growth, increased life expectancy, and climate change are all influencing the world's food systems, with a focus on the impact of protein sources. Current animal production systems use a large proportion of land and water resources while also contributing significantly to climate change through greenhouse gas emissions. Calls to reduce consumption of animal products in order to address concerns about health and the environment have led to exploration of alternative protein sources such as plants, insects, and single-cell organisms.
