Materials for Implantable Surface Electrode Arrays: Current Status and Future Directions

Christina M. Tringides et al.

Summary: Surface electrode arrays are mainly made of rigid or elastic materials and ductile metal films, offering limited stretchability. They are often repurposed for different tissues without optimizing the materials and mechanical properties for the specific application. To improve tissue interfaces and reduce damage, it is important to characterize the biological environment and design technology accordingly for each specific organ.

Porous PEDOT:PSS Particles and their Application as Tunable Cell Culture Substrate

Sebastian Bernhard Rauer et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel microfluidic process for the synthesis of pure PEDOT:PSS particles with adjustable properties. The particles can be tailored in terms of crystallinity, diameter, pore size, and electrochemical/mechanical properties by adjusting the IPA:SA ratio during synthesis. Experiments demonstrate the potential of PEDOT:PSS particles as a cell culture substrate for both mouse fibroblast cells and human fibroblast cells, showing exponential growth and high cell viability.

Platinum dissolution and tissue response following long-term electrical stimulation at high charge densities

Robert K. Shepherd et al.

Summary: Long-term electrical stimulation of platinum electrodes at charge densities well above existing safety limits does not adversely affect auditory nerve population or reduce neural function. Despite increased tissue response and platinum accumulation, there was no negative impact on neural function.

Building a (w)rapport between neurons and oligodendroglia: Reciprocal interactions underlying adaptive myelination

Sarah E. Pease-Raissi et al.

Summary: Myelin, essential for efficient action potential propagation in the central nervous system, is now understood to be a dynamic process that can modulate neuronal function. Recent research has shown a reciprocal relationship between neurons and oligodendrocytes, highlighting the importance of their communication in refining neuronal function.

Viscoelastic surface electrode arrays to interface with viscoelastic tissues

Christina M. Tringides et al.

Summary: This study introduces a fully viscoelastic microelectrode array for electrical stimulation and signal recording of heart and brain activities in vivo, utilizing an alginate matrix and carbon-based nanomaterials encapsulated in a viscoelastic hydrogel. The combination of viscoelastic materials enables the array to closely match the biomechanical properties of soft biological tissues, overcoming previous limitations. The use of hydrogels as outer layers and a hydrogel-based conductor enhanced with carbon nanomaterials allows for the fabrication of electrode arrays compatible with standard electrophysiology platforms.

Polymer Nanopillars Induce Increased Paxillin Adhesion Assembly and Promote Axon Growth in Primary Cortical Neurons

Frano Milos et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that substrates with defined topographic cues can improve neuronal development and potentially serve as tissue engineering scaffolds by mimicking the complex extracellular environment. Higher nanopillars effectively confine growing neurites, promoting better alignment to the topographical pattern, resulting in longer axons. The nanopillars also induce earlier axon establishment and change the periodicity of growth cone dynamics, leading to longer axons compared to flat substrates.
