Current rates of prosthetic usage in upper-limb amputees - have innovations had an impact on device acceptance?

Stefan Salminger et al.

Summary: This study collected data through a questionnaire survey on 68 traumatic upper limb amputees treated within the Austrian Trauma Insurance Agency from 1996 to 2016. It found a high rate of prosthesis abandonment in the upper extremity and no significant effect of recent advancements in prosthetic technology on acceptance.

Global prevalence of traumatic non-fatal limb amputation

Cody L. McDonald et al.

Summary: This study estimated the global population and distribution of traumatic limb amputations in 2017 using the results of the global burden of disease, identifying falls, road injuries, and other transportation injuries as the leading causes. Approximately 75,850 prosthetists are needed globally based on these estimates.

Transfer of mode switching performance: from training to upper-limb prosthesis use

Anniek Heerschop et al.

Summary: The study found that training switching skills is crucial for successful prosthesis use, and the type of feedback during training does not affect skill transfer. Clinical relevant measures and myosignal features changed during training.

Designing a Virtual Reality Myoelectric Prosthesis Training System for Amputees

Ivan Phelan et al.

Summary: Electrical signals from muscle contractions can effectively control artificial limbs, with myoelectric-powered prostheses being more functional than passive or body-powered ones. It has been shown that incorporating Virtual Reality (VR) technology into myoelectric training can provide a realistic and enjoyable experience for patients, while also improving the functionality of missing body parts. Additionally, VR technology can help new prosthesis users accept the fitting of the device to their body.
