Comparison of Eye-Based and Controller-Based Selection in Virtual Reality

Wen-jun Hou et al.

Summary: This study explored the Fitts' modeling of eye-based selection in a virtual reality environment with controller-based input, finding that controller-based interaction offered the highest throughput, best accuracy, and was preferred by most participants. Eye-trigger interaction performed in between the other two, and showed better performance in terms of accuracy with three-dimensional targets. Eye-based interaction still requires a more stable and precise eye-tracking device to become a mainstream interaction modality in virtual reality, but has irreplaceable potential in specific VR environments.
