Fabrication of Biomimetic 2D Nanostructures through Irradiation of Stainless Steel Surfaces with Double Femtosecond Pulses

Matina Vlahou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the changes in the topography of stainless steel induced by femtosecond laser with double pulses. The effects of parameters such as fluence, energy dose, and interpulse delay on the produced patterns are revealed. The study demonstrates that different spatial characteristics of surface patterns exhibit different wetting and cell adhesion properties, suggesting the potential application of this methodology in the development of tailored surfaces for functional implants.

Controlled periodicities of ladder-like structures via femtosecond laser of wavelength from 400 nm to 2200 nm

Md Abu Taher et al.

Summary: This study fabricates femtosecond laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) with low and high spatial frequencies on a stainless-steel surface simultaneously by varying the wavelength. The results show that the periodicities of both low and high spatial frequency LIPSS can be controlled by the wavelength, and the formation of high spatial frequency LIPSS depends on the primary low spatial frequency LIPSS. These experimental insights are important for understanding and describing the formation of LIPSS.

Irregular LIPSS produced on metals by single linearly polarized femtosecond laser

Dongshi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the generation of supra-wavelength periodic surface structures (SWPSS) on Sn and triangular and rhombic laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) on W, Mo, Ta, and Nb using a single linearly polarized femtosecond laser. The SWPSS patches possess independent orientations, breaking the traditional rules. The maximal period reported for SWPSS is 25 μm, while the formation of LIPSS depends on material composition. The study also characterizes the reflectance and iridescence of the prepared SWPSS and LIPSS.

Ruijie Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the development of multifunctional metasurfaces through femtosecond laser ablation of titanium, resulting in macropore/LIPSS micro/nanostructures. These structures exhibit superior performance in ultrabroadband UV-vis-NIR-MIR absorbance, photothermal conversion, and thermal-emission induced reflectance oscillation. The density and size of macropores can be controlled by adjusting laser power and scanning velocity, allowing for optimization of different functions.

Laser induced periodic surface structures as polarizing optical elements

Evangelos Skoulas et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates a method for producing polarizing plates exclusively via laser structuring, utilizing laser-induced periodic surface structures on nanometer-thick metallic films to achieve transmissive wire grid polarizer operation. The fabricated polarizing plates exhibit high transmittance and consistent polarization response at far and mid-infrared frequencies, with efficient polarizing efficiency as confirmed by numerical calculations. This approach offers a new way for fabricating wire grid polarizing plates and may lead to innovative laser-induced meta-optics.

Homogenization Theory of Space-Time Metamaterials

P. A. Huidobro et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a general framework for the homogenization theory of space-time metamaterials, deriving analytical formulas for effective material parameters in the low-frequency limit for traveling-wave modulations. It shows how synthetic motion can lead to giant bianisotropy and how modulation speed and phase can tune the nonreciprocal response. The theory is applied to derive exact formulas for the Fresnel drag in electromagnetic media with traveling-wave modulations, providing insight into differences and similarities between synthetic motion and moving matter.
