Lab-scale characterization and semi-field trials of Wolbachia Strain wAlbB in a Taiwan Wolbachia introgressed Ae. aegypti strain

Wei-Liang Liu et al.

Summary: This study describes a semi-field system for studying the ability of wAlbB-Tw mosquitoes to suppress local mosquito populations. The results show that wAlbB-Tw has a significant potential for use in vector control strategies aimed at Ae. aegypti population suppression. Open field release trials are now necessary to confirm the feasibility of wAlbB-Tw mediated suppression in natural environments.

Why did the Wolbachia transinfection cross the road? drift, deterministic dynamics, and disease control

Michael Turelli et al.

Summary: This study analyzes how stochastic frequency variation produced by finite population size can facilitate the unexpected spread of variants with bistable dynamics into other regions. The exemplar is the establishment of wMel Wolbachia in the Aedes aegypti population of Pyramid Estates in Australia. The results suggest that stochastic threshold crossing and steady immigration both contribute to the observed fixation of wMel.

Discrete dynamical models on Wolbachia infection frequency in mosquito populations with biased release ratios

Yantao Shi et al.

Summary: Two discrete models are developed to study the impact of supplemental releases on Wolbachia spreading dynamics in cage mosquito populations. The models show that releasing infected males or females can lead to bistable or semi-stable dynamics with three positive equilibrium points, while a unique positive equilibrium point results in global asymptotic stability. Numerical simulations provide insights for designing the release strategy.

Sensitivity of wMel and wAlbB Wolbachia infections in Aedes aegypti Puducherry (Indian) strains to heat stress during larval development

Summary: The study found that exposure to higher temperatures reduced the densities of wMel and wAlbB strains in Ae. aegypti larvae, especially in males. In simulated field conditions, high temperatures under sunlight caused larval mortality.

Estimating the Time Reproduction Number in Kupang City Indonesia, 2016-2020, and Assessing the Effects of Vaccination and Different Wolbachia Strains on Dengue Transmission Dynamics

Meksianis Z. Ndii et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the performance of Wolbachia bacteria may depend on different strains, with the WAu strain showing better efficacy in reducing dengue incidence. Vaccination on one group can decrease the disease rate in that specific group, but the impact on other groups is limited.

A Review: Aedes-Borne Arboviral Infections, Controls and Wolbachia-Based Strategies

Summary: Arthropod-borne viruses (Arboviruses) continue to pose significant health and economic burdens for people living in endemic regions. Among the various vector control methods, Wolbachia-based control shows promising results for eradicating Aedes-borne arboviruses, highlighting the importance of biological control strategies in combating arboviral diseases.

Effectiveness of Wolbachia-infected mosquito deployments in reducing the incidence of dengue and other Aedes-borne diseases in Niteroi, Brazil: A quasi-experimental study

Sofia B. Pinto et al.

Summary: The introduction of the wMel strain of the bacterium Wolbachia into Aedes aegypti mosquitoes has been shown to significantly reduce the transmission of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses. In a study conducted in Niteroi, Brazil, it was found that after three years of releases, there was a significant reduction in dengue, chikungunya, and Zika incidence in areas where the wMel-infected mosquitoes were deployed. This approach proved effective in reducing Aedes-borne diseases, even in environments with moderate and spatially heterogeneous prevalence of the wMel bacteria.
