Environmental adaptation in fish induced changes in the regulatory region of fatty acid elongase gene, elovl5, involved in long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis

Yongnan Li et al.

Summary: This study compared the transcriptional regulation of the critical enzyme, elovl5, in the LC-PUFA biosynthesis pathway in marine large yellow croaker and freshwater rainbow trout. The expression of elovl5 and chromatin accessibility in the regulatory region were higher in rainbow trout than in large yellow croaker. Additionally, differences in the sequence and activity of the elovl5 promoter were observed between the two species, as well as differences in the regulatory roles of transcription factors. These findings suggest that changes in the gene regulatory region driven by natural selection likely play a key role in differences in elovl5 expression and activity, influencing the LC-PUFA biosynthesis capacities of rainbow trout and large yellow croaker.

Desaturases and elongases involved in long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis in aquatic animals: From genes to functions

O. Monroig et al.

Summary: Traditional belief holds that marine microbes are the primary producers of omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) in marine ecosystems. However, recent studies have challenged this belief by discovering that many aquatic animals also have the enzyme machinery necessary for de novo biosynthesis of PUFA and LC-PUFA. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the genes and proteins involved in LC-PUFA biosynthesis in aquatic animals, particularly invertebrates and fish. It concludes that invertebrates and fish have different, yet active, LC-PUFA biosynthetic gene networks that result from complex evolutionary processes and functional diversification.

Molecular phylogenetic and morphometric analysis of population structure and demography of endangered threadfin fish Eleutheronema from Indo-Pacific waters

Jie Xiao et al.

Summary: The genetic diversity and population structure of threadfin Eleutheronema species in the Indo-Pacific regions were investigated. Analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences revealed low diversity in both Eleutheronema tetradactylum and Eleutheronema rhadinum. The South China Sea populations showed shallow genetic differentiation, while limited communication between China and Thailand populations resulted in high genetic differentiation. Phylogenetic relationships and demographic studies supported a shared common origin or ancestor of E. tetradactylum and E. rhadinum. Phenotypic divergence was also observed among populations, possibly due to specific local adaptations to environmental changes.

The repertoire of the elongation of very long-chain fatty acids (Elovl) protein family is conserved in tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum): Gene expression profiles offer insights into the sexual differentiation process

Renato B. Ferraz et al.

Summary: Elongation of very long-chain fatty acids (Elovl) proteins play a critical role in the regulation of fatty acid length. Different members of the Elovl family have specific substrate preferences, with PUFA elongases being particularly important in aquatic animals. In this study, the full repertoire of elovl genes in the tambaqui Colossoma macropomum genome was identified, and it was found that these genes are conserved in teleosts. Additionally, there was a gender bias in the expression of elovl genes during tambaqui sex differentiation.

Genome-wide characterization of the Elovl gene family in Gymnocypris przewalskii and their potential roles in adaptation to cold temperature

Sijia Liu et al.

Summary: The diversity of the Elovls gene family in fish plays critical roles in fatty acid synthesis and low-temperature stress adaptation. In this study, the Elovl genes in Gymnocypris przewalskii were identified and their expression profiles under cold stress were analyzed. The results revealed that different Elovl subtypes showed tissue-specific expression and some subtypes were highly expressed induced by cold stress. The fatty acid compositions in the hepatopancreas and skeletal muscle also changed significantly during cold adaptation.

Polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolism in three fish species with different trophic level

A. Galindo et al.

Summary: Reducing fishfeed dependency and species diversification are crucial for sustainable aquaculture development. Substituting fish oil with vegetable oils is economically feasible, but may compromise the nutritional value. Three fish species were studied for their potential to biosynthesize LC-PUFA, showing promise for aquaculture diversification.

Evolution and Functional Characteristics of the Novel elovl8 That Play Pivotal Roles in Fatty Acid Biosynthesis

Shouxiang Sun et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Elovl8 is not unique to teleosts, but has a wide phylogenetic distribution. Through the use of CRISPR/Cas9 technology, it was demonstrated that Elovl8a and Elovl8b play important roles in fatty acid elongation. Further experiments showed the substrate preferences and capabilities of these enzymes in fatty acid biosynthesis.
