Quantifying impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic through life-expectancy losses: a population-level study of 29 countries

Jose Manuel Aburto et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the life tables of 29 countries in 2020, finding that life expectancy at birth declined in most countries from 2019 to 2020, mainly due to increased mortality above age 60 and official COVID-19 deaths. The COVID-19 pandemic triggered significant mortality increases in 2020 on a scale not seen since World War II in Western Europe or the breakup of the Soviet Union in Eastern Europe.

The Cross-sectional Average Inequality in Lifespan (CAL+): A Lifespan Variation Measure That Reflects the Mortality Histories of Cohorts

Marilia R. Nepomuceno et al.

Summary: Lifespan variation is an important metric of mortality, and this study proposes a new measure called CAL(+) which combines the mortality histories of all cohorts using a cross-sectional approach. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the CAL(+) measure in exploring lifespan differences between age groups and cohorts in low-mortality countries or regions.

The relationship between longevity and lifespan variation

Andrea Nigri et al.

Summary: This study contributes to the discussion on longevity by investigating the long-term dynamics of life expectancy and lifespan variation. It found evidence of a negative relationship between longevity and lifespan variation, and suggested that this relationship varies depending on the section of life expectancy distribution a country is located in and how fast the country converges towards best performances.
