Cancer statistics, 2022

Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

DNA repair, recombination, and damage signaling

Anton Gartner et al.

Summary: Accurate DNA replication and propagation are crucial for the faithful transmission of genetic information. Various DNA repair and recombination pathways have evolved to repair DNA lesions generated by normal cellular function or external agents. Checkpoint pathways monitor the genome and coordinate repair processes. The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans is an ideal model organism for studying DNA repair, recombination, and checkpoint signaling. Understanding these processes in C. elegans provides insights into development, growth, and germ line function, as well as informing cancer mutational signatures in humans.

E2F1: Cause and Consequence of DNA Replication Stress

Shahd Fouad et al.

Summary: This review highlights the crucial role of E2F1 in regulating processes such as DNA replication and repair, as well as how tumor suppressor and oncogenic signaling pathways impact the regulation of E2F1. It also discusses the different roles of E2F1 in cellular stress responses and proposes some reflections on the integration of E2F1 activity with checkpoint control.

Centromere Protein F (CENPF) Serves as a Potential Prognostic Biomarker and Target for Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Yugang Huang et al.

Summary: Overexpression of Centromere Protein F (CENPF) is significantly correlated with tumorigenesis and poor prognosis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Down-regulation of CENPF inhibits cell proliferation, migration, and invasion, while slightly promoting apoptosis in human HepG2 cells. Gene-set enrichment analysis (GSEA) reveals that CENPF is mainly enriched in cell cycle regulation, particularly during G2/M transition of mitosis in HCC. Immune infiltration analysis shows significant differences in immune cell populations in HCC samples with different levels of CENPF expression. These findings suggest that CENPF may serve as a potential prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target for HCC.
