KEGG for taxonomy-based analysis of pathways and genomes

Minoru Kanehisa et al.

Summary: KEGG is a manually curated database resource that integrates various biological objects classified into systems, genomic, chemical, and health information. Through the KEGG identifier and URL links, users can retrieve and browse information for different biological objects, including pathway maps, hierarchy, and genomes. KEGG has also improved KO assignment annotation and included more eukaryotic genomes for better representation of organisms in the taxonomic tree. The taxonomy mapping enables analysis of the conservation of functional and physical links among genes in different organism groups.

Summary: Each year, the American Cancer Society compiles data on cancer occurrence and outcomes in the United States. The latest data shows that breast and prostate cancer progress has stagnated, while lung cancer has shown improvements in survival rates. Lung cancer incidence for advanced disease has declined while localized-stage rates have increased, resulting in higher survival rates. Mortality patterns align with incidence trends, with lung cancer deaths declining rapidly, breast cancer deaths slowing, and prostate cancer deaths stabilizing.

Clinical Potential of lncRNA PPP1R26-AS1 in Breast Cancer and Its Contribution to Cancer Progression

Shuping Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, the biomarker potential and cellular function of long non-coding RNA PPP1R26-AS1 were investigated in breast cancer. The results showed that PPP1R26-AS1 was highly expressed in breast tissues and cell lines and its upregulation was associated with certain clinical parameters and shorter overall survival in breast cancer patients. Knockdown of PPP1R26-AS1 significantly reduced cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Additionally, PPP1R26-AS1 was found to act as a ceRNA binding with miR-1226-3p in breast cancer.

Copper induces cell death by targeting lipoylated TCA cycle proteins

Peter Tsvetkov et al.

Summary: Copper is an essential cofactor for all organisms, but excessive copper can lead to cell death. We found that copper-dependent cell death mechanism is different from known mechanisms, and it is related to mitochondrial respiration. Copper directly binds to lipoylated components of the tricarboxylic acid cycle, causing protein aggregation and loss of iron-sulfur cluster proteins, ultimately leading to cell death.

Copper metabolism as a unique vulnerability in cancer

Vinit C. Shanbhag et al.

Summary: Over the past 25 years, significant progress has been made in identifying and characterizing proteins that regulate the uptake, intracellular trafficking and export of copper. While copper is essential for growth and development in humans and other mammals, it is also a limiting nutrient for cancer cell growth and proliferation. Oral copper chelators have been shown to have anti-neoplastic and anti-metastatic effects in animals and humans.

lncRNA ADAMTS9-AS1 promotes bladder cancer cell invasion, migration, and inhibits apoptosis and autophagy through PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway

Guoqing Yang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the high expression of ADAMTS9-AS1 in bladder cancer promotes cell proliferation, migration, and invasion while reducing apoptosis and autophagy. It was also observed that ADAMTS9-AS1 may regulate these processes through the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. Targeting ADAMTS9-AS1 could be a potential therapeutic approach for treating bladder cancer.

Lnc00892 competes with c-Jun to block NCL transcription, reducing the stability of RhoA/RhoC mRNA and impairing bladder cancer invasion

Shuwei Ren et al.

Summary: The study found that the long noncoding RNA lnc00892 is significantly downregulated in bladder cancer tissues and its low expression is associated with poor prognosis. Lnc00892 was shown to inhibit migration, invasion, and metastasis of bladder cancer cells by reducing nucleolin gene transcription and inhibiting nucleolin-mediated stabilization of RhoA/RhoC mRNA. These findings suggest that lnc00892 may serve as a potential therapeutic target for invasive bladder cancer patients.
