Fore-to-retroarc crustal structure of the north Patagonian margin: How is shortening distributed in Andean-type orogens?

Andres Echaurren et al.

Summary: During the long-term evolution of orogenic belts like the Andes, it is not well understood to what extent their different components, the fore-to-retroarc domains, are deformed together or separately. In this study, new field and seismic data of the Chilean forearc at Chiloe Island latitude were integrated with retroarc structure to visualize the crustal architecture in the north Patagonian margin. The results show a coupling of fore-to-retroarc behavior during certain periods, which ceased during the Pliocene due to glaciations. The study also reveals different mechanisms controlling the forearc basins during late Cenozoic changing tectonic conditions.

Feedbacks between sea-floor spreading, trade winds and precipitation in the Southern Red Sea

Kurt Stuewe et al.

Summary: This paper examines the Great Escarpment of the Arabian Red Sea margin and explores the feedback loop between geological and climatic processes. The authors find that a cycle of orographic precipitation, tectonic deformation, mid-ocean spreading, and coastal magmatism explains the geomorphological features of the region. The feedback is enhanced by the trade winds that coincided with sea floor spreading in the Red Sea.

Effects of asthenospheric flow and orographic precipitation on continental rifting

Pietro Sternai et al.

Summary: This study examines how interactions between the asthenosphere and lithosphere, influenced by surface processes, impact topography and the evolution of extensional tectonic settings. It reveals the correlation between moist air encountering topographic barriers and enhanced erosion, as well as the role of orographic erosion gradients in the formation of extensional structures.

Subduction zone fluids and arc magmas conducted by lithospheric deformed regions beneath the central Andes

E. Contreras-Reyes et al.

Summary: Dehydration of the oceanic subducting slab leads to the formation of magmatic arcs, intra-slab intermediate-depth seismicity, and hydration of the overlying mantle wedge. The complex permeability structure of the overriding plate controls magma and fluid migration, with ascending melts accumulating preferentially in the back-arc and hydrothermal systems forming trenchward of the volcanic arc. Results from this study highlight the thick continental crust, weakly hydrated mantle lithospheric wedge, and regions of high permeability/fracturing and fluid content in the forearc continental crust.

Secular variations of magma source compositions in the North Patagonian batholith from the Jurassic to Tertiary: Was melange melting involved?

Antonio Castro et al.

Summary: The study of Sr-Nd initial isotopic ratios of plutons from the North Patagonian batholith provides insights into a 180 million-year secular evolution involving magma sources and changes in tectonic regime. The results suggest that source composition was influenced by the incorporation of various crustal materials and trench sediments, leading to the generation of batholith magma during periods of fast convergence and high obliquity between plates. The model proposed in the study explains the geochemical variations of Andean batholiths and addresses the absence of ultramafic cumulates in the lower arc crust and continental crust.

Geodynamic controls on magmatic arc migration and quiescence

Guido M. Gianni et al.

Summary: The study emphasizes that understanding the combination of both perspectives, the space-time arc pattern and the associated geological framework, provides the best approach to unravel the dominant process controlling arc migration and shut-off. By diagnosing features from the geological record, it can help distinguish the dominant geodynamic process.

Anisotropic tomography of the Cascadia subduction zone

Dapeng Zhao et al.

Summary: This study reveals the anisotropy of the crust and upper-mantle wedge in the Cascadia subduction zone, as well as the relationship between the slab and subslab mantle. It was found that magma materials flow from the subslab mantle into the Cascadia volcanoes and back-arc area, leading to decompression melting.
