Higher spatial resolution improves the interpretation of the extent of ventricular trabeculation

Hanne C. E. Riekerk et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of higher spatial resolution on the detection of trabeculation in human hearts. The results showed that measurements using high resolution MRI provide greater accuracy in evaluating cardiac wall morphology, with the number of detected trabeculations and T/C ratio positively correlated with higher spatial resolution. Additionally, the study could not replicate the previous reported correlation between trabeculations of the left and right ventricle using histological validation.

Long-term Outcomes of Adults With Single Ventricle Physiology Not Undergoing Fontan Repair: A Multicentre Experience

Francisco Buendia-Fuentes et al.

Summary: This study found that adult patients with single ventricle physiology without Fontan palliation exhibit a high mortality rate and frequent major cardiovascular events. At least moderate atrioventricular valve regurgitation, thrombocytopenia, renal dysfunction, and QRS duration > 120 ms at baseline visit are associated with an increased risk of mortality.

The Secrets of the Frogs Heart

Antonio F. Corno et al.

Summary: The unique cardiac anatomy and physiological characteristics of the African clawed frog, including balanced circulation and low metabolic rate, were studied through anatomical dissection, echocardiography, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. Key findings include intact interatrial septum, separate atrio-ventricular valves, single spongiform ventricular cavity, and a valve-like spiral structure in the conus arteriosus.

Quantified growth of the human embryonic heart

Jaeike W. Faber et al.

Summary: This study used three-dimensional heart models and annotated data to illustrate the size and growth patterns of components of the human embryonic heart at different developmental stages. Discrepancies in myocardial mass between left and right atria were observed, with exponential growth of the heart during embryonic development. Additionally, the study found that the rightward expansion of the atrioventricular canal starts in week 5.
