Magnetic control of tokamak plasmas through deep reinforcement learning

Jonas Degrave et al.

Summary: Nuclear fusion using magnetic confinement, specifically in the tokamak configuration, is a promising method for sustainable energy. In this study, researchers introduce a previously undescribed architecture for the design of tokamak magnetic controllers, which autonomously learns to command the full set of control coils. This approach demonstrates unprecedented flexibility and generality in problem specification, leading to a notable reduction in design effort and the ability to produce new plasma configurations.

Co-Wound Superconducting Wire for Quench Detection in Fusion Magnets

N. Bykovskiy et al.

Summary: High temperature superconducting materials are commonly used in fusion magnet design proposals, but reliable quench detection in HTS conductors remains a challenge. Using high normal state resistance superconducting wire as a sensor can improve sensitivity for voltage-based quench detection methods. Different wire options can be adapted for fusion conductors, allowing for flexibility in design and experimental verification of the method.

Study of a Current-Based Quench Detection Method for CCT Magnets via a Co-Wound Superconducting Sensing Wire

Jiani Gao et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a current-based quench detection method for Nb-3 Sn CCT type accelerator magnets, which uses a co-wound superconducting wire and current derivative sensor in the magnet. The detection system relies on the drop in current during a quench to detect the quench, and the advantages and limitations of this method are discussed.
