The association of myopia progression with the morphological changes of optic disc and β-peripapillary atrophy in primary school students

Jing-Shang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study examined the relationship between myopia progression and morphological changes of the optic disc and beta-peripapillary atrophy (beta-PPA) in 8-11 year old primary school students. The findings showed that the progression of myopia was associated with changes in beta-PPA and optic disc ovality index, with a positive correlation between the changes in beta-PPA and optic disc ovality index and the progression of myopic diopter and axial length.

Association between esodeviation and primary open-angle glaucoma: the 2010-2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Jin-Soo Kim et al.

Summary: In the Korean population, individuals with clinically significant esodeviation had a much higher prevalence of POAG (12.32%) compared to those without clinically significant esodeviation (3.14%, p=0.016). After adjusting for age and intraocular pressure, clinically significant esodeviation was independently associated with POAG (OR 7.61, p=0.002).

Adduction-Induced Strain on the Optic Nerve in Primary Open Angle Glaucoma at Normal Intraocular Pressure

Robert A. Clark et al.

Summary: The study found that in healthy individuals, the optic nerve stretches to absorb force and prevent globe retraction during adduction, while in POAG patients, the relatively inelastic optic nerve tethers and retracts the globe during adduction beyond 26 degrees, potentially leading to progressive neuropathy.

Material properties and effect of preconditioning of human sclera, optic nerve, and optic nerve sheath

Joseph Park et al.

Summary: The optic nerve exerts tractional load on the eye during eye rotations, and the material properties of the sclera, optic nerve, and its sheath vary among different regions. Preconditioning has differing effects on ocular tissue stiffness, with some regions softening while others stiffening. Mechanical properties show moderate correlation within individual eyes, but potentially pathological combinations can arise due to discrepancies in regional properties.

Finite Element Model of Ocular Adduction by Active Extraocular Muscle Contraction

Somaye Jafari et al.

Summary: A finite element model was developed to simulate ocular rotation induced by active contraction of extraocular muscles, with or without tethering by the optic nerve. Physiologically plausible tensions and deformations of the EOMs during incremental adduction were analyzed, revealing the biomechanical behavior of the muscles in relation to the optic nerve.
