Ammonia synthesis using Co catalysts supported on MgO-Nd2O3 mixed oxide systems: Effect of support composition

Hubert Ronduda et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of mixed MgO-Nd2O3 oxide supports for the dispersion of Co metal for ammonia synthesis. Different ratios of Mg/Nd were evaluated, and it was found that the support composition significantly influenced the catalyst performance. The catalyst with a Mg/Nd molar ratio of 10 exhibited the highest number of basic sites and the best dispersion of Co particles, resulting in superior activity for ammonia synthesis.

Development of cobalt catalyst supported on MgO-Ln2O3 (Ln 1/4 La, Nd, Eu) mixed oxide systems for ammonia synthesis

Hubert Ronduda et al.

Summary: The binding of hydrogen with nitrogen in the ammonia molecule has great potential as a method for hydrogen storage. The development of efficient ammonia synthesis catalysts is crucial for this reaction. In this study, a series of MgO-Ln2O3 mixed oxides were used as the support for cobalt catalysts, and the tuning of the support composition led to changes in the catalysts' physicochemical properties. The Co/MgO-Nd2O3 catalyst showed superior activity in the NH3 synthesis reaction, attributed to increased density of medium basic sites and enhanced electron-donating ability.

On Optimal Barium Promoter Content in a Cobalt Catalyst for Ammonia Synthesis

Aleksandra Tarka et al.

Summary: By optimizing the composition of cobalt catalysts with double promoters, specifically cerium and barium, the research found that a certain range of barium content leads to the most favorable catalytic performance, attributed to an appropriate Ba/Ce molar ratio and in-situ formation of BaCeO3 phase.

A spin promotion effect in catalytic ammonia synthesis

Ang Cao et al.

Summary: This article provides an overview of recent experimental results on new promoters for ammonia synthesis and develops a model to explain their working principles. The authors identify a new promotion mechanism mediated by the coupling between adsorption and spin polarization on the surface atoms of magnetic catalysts, resulting in a lowering of activation energy.

On the effect of metal loading on the performance of Co catalysts supported on mixed MgO-La2O3 oxides for ammonia synthesis

Hubert Ronduda et al.

Summary: This study reports cobalt catalysts supported on magnesium-lanthanum mixed oxide with different Co loading amounts synthesized via a simple wet impregnation method. It has been found that there is a clear relationship between the ammonia synthesis rate and the Co loading amount, with the synthesis rate increasing on increasing cobalt loading and reaching a maximum at 40 wt% Co deposition. Furthermore, the surface-specific activity (TOF) remains almost unchanged regardless of the Co loading amount in the catalysts.

Economies of scale in ammonia synthesis loops embedded with iron- and ruthenium-based catalysts

Masaki Yoshida et al.

Summary: The paper analyzed the economies of scale in ammonia synthesis loops with iron-based and ruthenium-based catalysts, showing that ruthenium-based catalysts have cost advantages on a small scale. In addition to discussing catalytic activity and cost, the direction of future research on catalysts for ammonia synthesis is also highlighted.

Barium Oxide Encapsulating Cobalt Nanoparticles Supported on Magnesium Oxide: Active Non-Noble Metal Catalysts for Ammonia Synthesis under Mild Reaction Conditions

Katsutoshi Sato et al.

Summary: Encapsulating cobalt nanoparticles with barium oxide enhanced the ammonia synthesis activity, leading to exceptional performance of a simple barium-doped cobalt/MgO catalyst pre-reduced at high temperature. This catalyst showed significantly improved synthesis rates compared to conventional ruthenium-based catalysts, even operating at lower temperatures. The unique structure formed by the encapsulation process facilitated electron donation and accelerated the cleavage of the triple bond, enhancing the rate-limiting step for ammonia synthesis.

Boosting the Catalytic Performance of Co/Mg/La Catalyst for Ammonia Synthesis by Selecting a Pre-Treatment Method

Hubert Ronduda et al.

Summary: The influence of different thermal pre-treatment methods on the Co/Mg/La catalysts for ammonia synthesis was studied. Air calcination prior to activation was found to lead to the most favorable catalytic performance, attributed to the catalyst's strong basicity and favorable adsorption properties toward hydrogen and nitrogen. Detailed characterization methods showed that the superior catalytic behavior of this catalyst was due to its unique physicochemical properties.
