Healthcare Professionals' Views of Factors Influencing Diabetes Self-Management and the Utility of a mHealth Application and Its Features to Support Self-Care

Sungwon Yoon et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore factors influencing diabetes self-management in adult patients with diabetes from the perspectives of healthcare professionals (HCPs) and their views of the value of mHealth application. The study found that barriers to self-management included limited patient commitment to lifestyle changes and suboptimal adherence to medication and treatment. HCPs saw mHealth apps as a vital opportunity to engage patients in the self-management of conditions.

EMPOWERing Patients With Diabetes Using Profiling and Targeted Feedbacks Delivered Through Smartphone App and Wearable (EMPOWER): Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial on Effectiveness and Implementation

Yu Heng Kwan et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the clinical and cost-effectiveness of personalized educational and behavioral interventions delivered through a mobile application in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It is a randomized controlled trial (RCT) where T2DM patients will be recruited and randomly allocated to an intervention group or a control group. The primary outcome is patient activation score at 12 months, and secondary outcomes include HbA1c, physical activity level, diet, quality of life, medication adherence, and healthcare cost.

Technology-Delivered Adaptations of Motivational Interviewing for the Prevention and Management of Chronic Diseases: Scoping Review

Havisha Pedamallu et al.

Summary: This scoping review examined the characteristics of technology-adapted motivational interviewing (TAMI) interventions and found that TAMIs may improve some health promotion and disease management behaviors. However, there is limited design specifically for marginalized sociodemographic groups, and no elements addressing sociocontextual challenges are included. Further research is needed to determine the impact of TAMIs on individual health outcomes, incorporate elements addressing sociocontextual factors, and identify best practices for implementing TAMIs in clinical practice.

Combining mHealth and health-coaching for improving self-management in chronic care. A scoping review

Louise Faurholt Obro et al.

Summary: Health professionals are calling for efficient tools to engage patients in managing their illnesses, with mobile health (mHealth) seen as a promising approach. However, the potential benefits of combining health-coaching with mHealth are still unclear. The preference for physical interactions over telecommunication among patients suggests a need to prioritize human contact and explore more personalized health technology.
