The Role of l-Carnitine in Mitochondria, Prevention of Metabolic Inflexibility and Disease Initiation

Mohamed Ashraf Virmani et al.

Summary: Mitochondria play a critical role in cellular fate and metabolism, and their dysfunction is implicated in various diseases. l-carnitine, an important nutrient for proper mitochondrial function, is involved in fatty acid oxidation and has protective effects on cellular membranes. It also modulates ketogenesis, glucogenesis, and the elimination of toxic metabolites. Deficiency in l-carnitine is observed in many diseases and addressing nutrient deficiencies, like l-carnitine, holds promise for managing age and metabolic related diseases.

Animal- and Plant-Based Protein Sources: A Scoping Review of Human Health Outcomes and Environmental Impact

Luca Ferrari et al.

Summary: Proteins are essential for human nutrition and have various effects on body composition, metabolism, and immune system activity. This review compares animal and plant-based protein sources and finds that vegetable protein sources are associated with better health outcomes, especially for the cardiovascular system. They also have a lower environmental impact, which should be considered when designing a healthy diet.

Association of Urinary and Plasma Levels of Trimethylamine N-Oxide (TMAO) with Foods

Mauro Lombardo et al.

Summary: There is a strong correlation between TMAO and fish consumption, particularly saltwater fish and shellfish, while the associations of TMAO with eggs, dairy, and meat are less clear. Plant-based foods do not seem to influence TMAO levels significantly, but this area requires further investigation.

Cardiovascular disease and COVID-19: a consensus paper from the ESC Working Group on Coronary Pathophysiology & Microcirculation, ESC Working Group on Thrombosis and the Association for Acute CardioVascular Care (ACVC), in collaboration with the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA)

Summary: COVID-19 significantly impacts the cardiovascular system, causing microvascular damage, endothelial dysfunction, and thrombosis. Pre-existing cardiovascular diseases and viral load are associated with myocardial injury and poor outcomes, potentially leading to post-acute complications.
