Plant-derived nootropics and human cognition: A systematic review

Cristina Lorca et al.

Summary: This systematic review provides state-of-the-art information on the proven and unproven effects of plant-derived nootropics (PDNs) on human cognition in conditions of health and disease. The findings suggest that Ginkgo biloba is most relevant to perceptual and motor functions, Bacopa monnieri improves language, learning, and memory, Withania somnifera modulates anxiety and social-related cognitions, and caffeine enhances attention and executive functions.

Effects of a Bacopa monnieri extract (Bacognize®) on stress, fatigue, quality of life and sleep in adults with self-reported poor sleep: A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study

Adrian L. Lopresti et al.

Summary: Bacopa monnieri did not show significant improvement in sleep patterns compared to placebo, but it was associated with greater improvements in emotional wellbeing, general health, and pain-related symptoms. It also led to greater reductions in salivary concentrations of sIgA and sAA compared to the placebo. Future clinical trials with varying doses, treatment periods, and objective outcome measures are needed to validate these findings.

The Joint Effects of Diet and Dietary Supplements in Relation to Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease over a 10-Year Follow-Up: A Longitudinal Study of 69,990 Participants in Australia

Xiaoyue Xu et al.

Summary: A long-term healthy diet combined with multivitamins and minerals or fish oil intake was associated with a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease, while an unhealthy diet was linked to a higher risk of obesity. Maintaining a healthy diet and using calcium supplements were associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
