Optimizing hepcidin measurement with a proficiency test framework and standardization improvement

Ellis T. Aune et al.

Summary: The development of a high-level calibrator in addition to the two-level secondary reference material for hepcidin assays has shown potential for optimized standardization and quality assurance in laboratory testing. The pilot proficiency testing confirmed the feasibility of an annual scheme and highlighted the need for external quality assurance due to variability in accuracy among different measurement procedures. International implementation of standardized measurement procedures with a high-level calibrator is crucial for successful application in patient care and laboratory accreditation.

Iron Deficiency in Infancy and Neurocognitive and Educational Outcomes in Young Adulthood

Patricia East et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of iron deficiency in infancy on adverse neurocognitive and educational outcomes in young adulthood. The results showed that iron deficiency in infancy was associated with poor executive control at age 21, lower verbal IQ, more inattention and SCT symptoms in childhood, and lower educational attainment in young adulthood through its effect on inattention. Interventions to improve cognitive and attention deficits related to early-life iron deficiency are warranted.

Maternal Overweight and Obesity during Pregnancy Are Associated with Neonatal, but Not Maternal, Hepcidin Concentrations

Andrew D. Jones et al.

Summary: This study found that both pregnant women and neonates' hepcidin levels were responsive to iron status. Maternal prepregnancy overweight status was associated with lower cord blood hepcidin concentrations, likely due to lower iron status among the infants born to these mothers.

Threshold ferritin and hepcidin concentrations indicating early iron deficiency in young women based on upregulation of iron absorption

Valeria Galetti et al.

Summary: In young women, iron absorption begins to increase when plasma ferritin concentration falls below 51 μg/L, indicating incipient iron deficiency. Hepcidin concentration below 3 nmol/L also corresponds to increased iron absorption, consistent with the ferritin threshold.

Iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy: A contemporary review

Charlotte S. Benson et al.

Summary: Iron deficiency anaemia during pregnancy can have harmful effects on maternal and perinatal health, suggesting the need for improved treatment strategies. Researchers believe that altering the dose and frequency of oral iron may enhance therapeutic effectiveness.
