Human Milk and Preterm Infant Brain Development: A Narrative Review

Mandy Brown Belfort et al.

Summary: This article reviewed the literature on human milk and structural brain development and injury in preterm infants, with a focus on the application of quantitative brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in this field. The findings revealed that greater exposure to human milk was associated with favorable outcomes, including more mature and connected cerebral white matter, less injury, and larger regional brain volumes.

The Role of l-Carnitine in Mitochondria, Prevention of Metabolic Inflexibility and Disease Initiation

Mohamed Ashraf Virmani et al.

Summary: Mitochondria play a critical role in cellular fate and metabolism, and their dysfunction is implicated in various diseases. l-carnitine, an important nutrient for proper mitochondrial function, is involved in fatty acid oxidation and has protective effects on cellular membranes. It also modulates ketogenesis, glucogenesis, and the elimination of toxic metabolites. Deficiency in l-carnitine is observed in many diseases and addressing nutrient deficiencies, like l-carnitine, holds promise for managing age and metabolic related diseases.

Acylcarnitines: Nomenclature, Biomarkers, Therapeutic Potential, Drug Targets, and Clinical Trials

Maija Dambrova et al.

Summary: Acylcarnitines are fatty acid metabolites that play important roles in cellular energy metabolism and have potential as biomarkers and pharmaceutical agents for various diseases. This comprehensive review provides detailed information on the identity, nomenclature, classification, biochemistry, pathophysiology, and clinical trials of acylcarnitines. It also discusses their use as dietary supplements and the emerging opportunities for using them as biomarkers and interventions in different indications. The review lays a solid foundation for further understanding the physiological roles of acylcarnitines and the identification of new drug targets.

Improving long-term health outcomes of preterm infants: how to implement the findings of nutritional intervention studies into daily clinical practice

Charlotte A. Ruys et al.

Summary: Preterm-born children are at risk for neurodevelopmental problems and cardiometabolic diseases later in life, with early-life growth restriction and suboptimal neonatal nutrition identified as risk factors. High protein and energy intake in the first weeks of life can improve growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes, but transitioning to a higher protein-to-energy ratio after 32-34 weeks postconceptional age is recommended to prevent excess fat mass and long-term health risks. Postnatally, consideration should be given to a protein-enriched diet to optimize growth patterns and minimize cardiometabolic risks in preterm infants.

Length of Nutritional Transition Associates Negatively with Postnatal Growth in Very Low Birthweight Infants

Lotta Immeli et al.

Summary: This study found that in VLBW infants, the length of the transition phase is negatively associated with macronutrient intake and growth from birth to term equivalent age. Infants with a longer transition phase showed significantly lower weight and head circumference growth compared to those with a shorter transition phase.

Using Nature to Nurture: Breast Milk Analysis and Fortification to Improve Growth and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes in Preterm Infants

Katherine Marie Ottolini et al.

Summary: Premature infants are born before a critical window of rapid placental nutrient transfer and fetal growth in the third trimester, leading to growth failure and neurodevelopmental impairments. Human milk is recommended for preterm infants, but additional fortification is needed to meet nutritional demands. Individualized fortification methods show promise in improving growth and neurodevelopmental outcomes.
