Effects of school-based high-intensity interval training on body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness and cardiometabolic markers in adolescent boys with obesity: a randomized controlled trial

Cao Meng et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a real-world school-based high-intensity interval training intervention on body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness and cardiometabolic markers in obese boys aged 10 to 13 years. The results showed that both high-intensity interval training and moderate-intensity continuous training can effectively reduce BMI and body fat mass, and improve cardiorespiratory fitness in obese boys. Furthermore, high-intensity interval training was found to be superior in reducing visceral adipose tissue and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Further research with a larger sample size and more schools is recommended.

Obesity in children and adolescents: epidemiology, causes, assessment, and management

Hiba Jebeile et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the current knowledge on child and adolescent obesity, including its epidemiology, causes, assessment considerations, and management approaches. Prevalence of obesity had plateaued in high-income countries but increased in low-income and middle-income countries before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, weight gain among children and adolescents has increased during the pandemic. Obesity is associated with various health issues and premature mortality. The development and persistence of obesity can be explained by a bio-socioecological framework. The first-line treatment approaches involve family-based behavioral interventions addressing diet, physical activity, sedentary behaviors, and sleep quality. Additional therapies such as intensive dietary approaches, pharmacotherapy, and metabolic and bariatric surgery are emerging, but access to them is limited. Personalized treatment approaches and their translation to clinical practice still require further research.

Special Diets in Infants and Children and Impact on Gut Microbioma

Elisabetta Di Profio et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota, influenced by multiple factors, plays a crucial role in the development of infants and children. Breastfeeding, complementary feeding, and dietary patterns during infancy and toddlerhood are important for the proper development of the gut microbiota. Dysbiosis can have long-lasting effects, leading to an increased risk of non-communicable diseases, weakened immune system, and alterations in the gut-brain axis. Children with specific diseases require special formulas and diets to exclude certain foods or nutrients. This review aims to examine the impact of special formulas and diets on the gut microbiota and their potential health implications in children.

The Impact of Dietary Fiber as a Prebiotic on Inflammation in Children with Obesity

Chonnikant Visuthranukul et al.

Summary: This study found that intensive behavioral modification and frequent follow-up visits were effective in reducing BMI and adiposity and decreasing inflammatory cytokines in obese children. However, the additional benefits of inulin on inflammation could not be demonstrated due to the Hawthorne effect. Among the inflammatory cytokines, IL-6 was found to be the most likely mediator relating to body fat and insulin resistance in obese children.

Summary: This study evaluated the physical activity level and fitness performance of children and adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The results showed that IBD patients had lower physical activity levels and poorer physical competence compared to healthy children. Furthermore, the study found that speed agility was related to age and BMI z-score, while flexibility was related to BMI z-score.

Summary: In this study, a 12-month lifestyle modification program involving a Mediterranean diet and physical activity in metabolically healthy obese children showed significant improvements in adherence to the Mediterranean diet, lipid intake, moderate-vigorous physical activity, body composition, insulin resistance, and carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT). The intervention also led to reductions in body weight, BMI, protein intake, fatty acids, total fat, and cholesterol intake, as well as improvements in glycemic profiles and normalization of pathological cIMT values.

Effects of low-glycemic index diet on plasma adipokines in obese children

Summary: The low-glycemic index diet did not have a significant effect on plasma adipokines, but higher baseline leptin levels were associated with lower reductions in fat mass. Leptin resistance may hinder the reduction of adiposity in obese children, and baseline leptin could serve as a useful predictor for changes in body composition during obesity intervention.
