Mercury Exposure in Artisanal Mining: Assessing the Effect of Occupational Activities on Blood Mercury Levels Among Artisanal and Small-Scale Goldminers in Ghana

Benjamin M. Saalidong et al.

Summary: The study found that a considerable proportion of artisanal and small-scale goldminers have high blood mercury levels, with miners who amalgamate gold, burn amalgam, and smelt gold being more likely to have high blood mercury levels. Risk can be minimized with proper equipment and personal protective gear, while unsafe and unsustainable occupational practices should be avoided.

Analysis of Se and Hg biomolecules distribution and Se speciation in poorly studied protein fractions of muscle tissues of highly consumed fishes by SEC-UV-ICP-MS and HPLC-ESI-MS/MS

Tamara Fernandez-Bautista et al.

Summary: The distribution of Se and Hg in different protein fractions extracted from muscle tissues of tuna, swordfish, and salmon (wild vs. farmed) was investigated for the first time. The study revealed that Se and Hg were associated with proteins of specific molecular weights, with differences observed between farmed and wild salmon. Additionally, Se speciation studies showed SeMeSeCys as the primary selenium species found in the proteins analyzed.

Mercury and cancer: Where are we now after two decades of research?

Anatoly Skalny et al.

Summary: The present study reviewed epidemiological and experimental toxicology studies on the association between mercury (Hg) exposure and carcinogenesis over the past two decades. It was found that Hg exposure levels were linked to cancer risk and mortality in some studies, and the mechanisms involved interference with cellular signaling pathways and DNA repair mechanisms. Furthermore, Hg exposure may also impact epigenetic effects and contribute to carcinogenic activity.

Summary: This study measured blood metals in American Indian communities and found that the overall exposure levels were higher in these communities, with associations with demographic, behavioral, and weight-related factors. Participants from North Dakota and South Dakota had the highest blood metal levels. These findings will help guide the development of education and intervention strategies to reduce harmful exposures.

Selenoprotein P - Selenium transport protein, enzyme and biomarker of selenium status

Lutz Schomburg

Summary: The habitual intake of selenium varies across the world, putting many people at risk of selenium deficiency and related health risks. SELENOP plays an important role in selenium transport to vital organs, such as endocrine glands and the brain. SELENOP deficiency is associated with health risks, and circulating SELENOP concentrations serve as a biomarker of selenium supply. SELENOP may have enzymatic activity and protective functions, but its role in the intact organism is still unclear. SELENOP-dependent selenium transport is an important and modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular and critical diseases, cancer, and autoimmune thyroiditis.

Summary: The study investigated local distribution patterns of mercury in mice organs after exposure to Hg and Se using LA-ICP-MS. Results showed different distributions of Hg in mouse organs under different exposure conditions. Furthermore, higher levels of Hg were observed in organs when co-exposed to Hg and Se, with a significant increase in Se levels in tissues.

Cadmium, total mercury, and lead in blood and associations with diet, sociodemographic factors, and smoking in Swedish adolescents

Pernilla Almerud et al.

Summary: This study assessed blood concentrations of toxic metals in Swedish adolescents and found that Cd concentrations were higher in girls, while Hg and Pb concentrations were higher in boys. Intake of meat was inversely associated with Cd levels, while intake of fish, eggs, meat, and vegetables were positively associated with Hg levels, and intake of dairy products was negatively associated with Pb levels. Additionally, smokers had higher concentrations of Cd and Pb.

Mercury interactions with selenium and sulfur and the relevance of the Se:Hg molar ratio to fish consumption advice

Michael Gochfeld et al.

Summary: The translation highlights the importance of consuming fish as part of a healthy diet, but also warns about potential toxicity of certain fish due to high mercury levels. It explains the affinity between selenium and mercury, suggesting that a high Se:Hg molar ratio may mitigate toxicity, but also cautions against relying solely on this ratio for assessing fish safety.
