Increases in physical activity are associated with a faster rate of weight loss during dietary energy restriction in women with overweight and obesity

Nuno Casanova et al.

Summary: This secondary analysis examined the influence of changes in physical activity (PA), sedentary time and energy expenditure (EE) during dietary energy restriction on weight loss rate (WL) and 1-year weight change in women with overweight/obesity. The findings highlight that changes in sedentary time and PA during energy restriction were associated with the rate of weight loss, and changes in PA between post-WL and follow-up were associated with 1-year weight change.

Impact of shifting from laparoscopic to robotic surgery during 600 minimally invasive pancreatic and liver resections

Anouk M. L. H. Emmen et al.

Summary: This study assessed the safety and feasibility of robot-assisted laparoscopic hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery. The results showed that the introduction of robotic surgery increased the utilization of laparoscopic HPB surgery and improved some selected outcomes, but had no significant impact on mortality and major complications.

Clinical indicators useful in decision-making about palliative chemotherapy for end-of-life ovarian cancer patients

Kaori Kiuchi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of active palliative chemotherapy on end-of-life ovarian cancer patients and found that parameters such as NLR, mGPS, and PPI score may serve as indicators for discontinuation of palliative chemotherapy, thus aiding in maximizing end-of-life care for ovarian cancer patients.

Malnutrition as a risk factor for post-operative morbidity in gynecologic cancer: Analysis using a national surgical outcomes database

Emily C. Goins et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between various malnutrition definitions and post-operative morbidity in gynecologic malignancies using a national surgical outcomes database. The findings suggest that cancer-specific malnutrition criteria can be used for personalized preoperative risk assessments, as they are associated with major complications, readmissions, and reoperations.

Pro-Inflammatory Signalling PRRopels Cisplatin-Induced Toxicity

Ivan K. Domingo et al.

Summary: Cisplatin, a widely used chemotherapeutic drug, is effective against various solid cancers but limited by its adverse drug reactions. The most common reactions include nephrotoxicity, peripheral neuropathy, and ototoxicity. Previous studies focused on oxidative stress as the cause of these toxicities, but recent evidence suggests that inflammation may be the main driving force. This review summarizes the common and distinct inflammation characteristics among different adverse reactions, as well as current treatments targeting pro-inflammatory signaling pathways to improve the use of cisplatin.

Analysis of Risk Factors for High-dose Cisplatin-induced Renal Impairment in Head and Neck Cancer Patients

Hiroyoshi Koide et al.

Summary: In advanced head and neck cancer patients receiving concurrent chemoradiotherapy with high-dose cisplatin, the concomitant use of calcium channel blockers or lower hemoglobin levels is associated with an increased risk of cisplatin-induced renal impairment, while the concomitant use of proton pump inhibitors is associated with a decreased risk.

The Impact of Dietary Counselling on Achieving or Maintaining Normal Nutritional Status in Patients with Early and Locally Advanced Breast Cancer Undergoing Perioperative Chemotherapy

Magdalena Jodkiewicz et al.

Summary: Obesity is an independent prognostic factor for breast cancer and is associated with poorer response to treatment. This study found that dietary counselling before chemotherapy may limit weight gain and influence fat mass reduction, but does not guarantee maintenance of normal lipid parameters during chemotherapy.

Evolution of Molecular Targeted Cancer Therapy: Mechanisms of Drug Resistance and Novel Opportunities Identified by CRISPR-Cas9 Screening

Jue Hou et al.

Summary: Molecular targeted therapy has significantly improved cancer treatment by providing better therapeutic responses and reducing systemic toxicity. However, therapeutic resistance remains a major challenge, hindering the continuous clinical benefits for cancer patients. The recent development of advanced technologies, such as CRISPR-Cas9 screening and patient-derived models, has provided powerful tools to understand the underlying mechanisms of resistance in targeted cancer therapies. This review explores therapeutic targets and the high-throughput CRISPR-Cas9 screening technology, which can uncover potential mechanisms of unresponsiveness and guide the development of next-generation anti-cancer drugs.

Composite grading algorithm for the National Cancer Institute's Patient-Reported Outcomes version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (PRO-CTCAE)

Ethan Basch et al.

Summary: A composite grading algorithm has been developed to provide single numerical grades for adverse events assessed via the Patient-Reported Outcomes version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events, and can be useful in analyses and reporting. The algorithm was refined through a five-step process and was found to perform well and comparably to individual item scores on validity, reliability, sensitivity, and between-arm delineation.

The outcome of patients with serous papillary peritoneal cancer, fallopian tube cancer, and epithelial ovarian cancer by treatment eras: 27 years data from the SEER registry

Nicholas Pavlidis et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the differential effect of treatment periods on the survival of patients with stage IV SPPC, fallopian tube cancers, and EOC. The results showed significant differences in cause-specific survival among different treatment eras, with treatment era and age at diagnosis being closely associated with cause-specific survival. Subgroup analyses of phase III randomized controlled trials by tumor subset may provide more insights into the effects of novel therapies.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.
