The energy balance model of obesity: beyond calories in, calories out

Kevin D. Hall et al.

Summary: This article discusses two models of obesity, the carbohydrate-insulin model and the energy balance model. The article points out that the carbohydrate-insulin model better reflects the biology of weight control, while the energy balance model does not consider the biological mechanisms that promote weight gain. The article also provides an accurate description of the energy balance model, stating that the brain is the primary organ responsible for body weight regulation.

PM2.5 exposure and pediatric health in e-waste dismantling areas

Xiang Zeng et al.

Summary: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is the leading environmental risk factor for death. Children, who are at a pivotal stage of growth and development, are particularly sensitive and vulnerable to PM2.5 exposure. In areas where e-waste dismantling activities occur, PM2.5 levels are higher and contain toxic components. However, limited research has been done on the effects of PM2.5 exposure in e-waste dismantling areas on children's health.

Oxidative stress activates Ryr2-Ca2+ and apoptosis to promote PM2.5-induced heart injury of hyperlipidemia mice

Meiling Meng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the underlying mechanisms of PM2.5-induced cardiac injury in hyperlipidemia mice. It was found that hyperlipidemia mice are more susceptible to heart damage caused by PM2.5 exposure. Oxidative stress, cell apoptosis, and calcium imbalance were observed in this model. Treatment with NAC significantly decreased oxidative stress level and alleviated cardiac injury, calcium imbalance, and apoptosis induced by PM2.5 exposure in hyperlipidemia mice. The study demonstrates the contribution of the PM2.5-ROS-Ryr2-Ca2+ axis in PM2.5-induced heart injury of hyperlipidemia mice, providing a potential therapeutic target for related pathology.

A Review of Characteristics, Causes, and Formation Mechanisms of Haze in Southeast Asia

Dieu-Anh Van et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive review of the characteristics of haze in Southeast Asia and compares the frequency and intensity of haze events in recent years. The findings suggest that the differences in haze frequency and intensity among Southeast Asian cities are not only caused by local pollution sources, but also influenced by meteorology and long-range transport. Secondary aerosols also play an important role in haze formation.

Impacts of particulate matter (PM2.5) on the health status of outdoor workers: observational evidence from Malaysia

Thavin Kumar Mathana Sundram et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of PM2.5 concentration on the respiratory health of outdoor workers in Malaysia. The findings showed that changes in PM2.5 concentration were significantly associated with eye symptoms, nasal symptoms, and respiratory questionnaire results, but not with asthma control. Outdoor workers were more affected by changes in PM2.5 compared to indoor workers.

Combined exposure to PM2.5 and high-fat diet facilitates the hepatic lipid metabolism disorders via ROS/miR-155/PPAR? pathway

Zhou Du et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the combined negative effects of PM2.5 and high-fat diet (HFD) on liver lipid metabolism. The results showed that PM2.5 exposure resulted in increased liver fat content in HFD-fed mice and there was a synergistic effect between PM2.5 and HFD on hepatic lipotoxicity.

Oxidative stress-inducing effects of various urban PM2.5 road dust on human lung epithelial cells among 10 Chinese megacities

Jian Sun et al.

Summary: This study found that downtown road dust in China has higher levels of heavy metals, EC, and PAHs compared to nondowntown road dust. Vehicle emissions contribute more to downtown road dust than nondowntown road dust. The study also showed that road dust induced higher levels of intracellular ROS in northern cities compared to southern cities, with heavy metals being closely associated with ROS production in cells.

Prevalence, Associated Factors and Psychological Determinants of Obesity among Adults in Selangor, Malaysia

Sherina Mohd-Sidik et al.

Summary: The study investigated the prevalence of obesity among Malaysian adults in Selangor, revealing that factors such as gender, ethnic background, education level, and marital status were associated with increased risk of obesity. Additionally, it was found that perceived stress, suicidal ideation, and quality of life in the physical health domain negatively contributed to BMI among males, while stressful life events and quality of life in the psychological domain had opposite effects on BMI among females. The study concluded that integrating psychological approaches is essential for enhancing the effectiveness of obesity prevention strategies and weight-loss programs.

Ecohydrological trade-offs from multiple peatland disturbances: The interactive effects of drainage, harvesting, restoration and wildfire in a southern Ontario bog

C. P. R. McCarter et al.

Summary: The study reveals that multiple disturbances have complex impacts on peatland ecohydrology. The varied topography in the shallower harvested areas increased peat carbon losses from wildfires, but also promoted the regeneration of Sphagnum mosses; while the higher water retention capabilities in the deeper harvested areas reduced the risk of fires, but were less suitable for Sphagnum moss regeneration.

Wildfire smoke impacts respiratory health more than fine particles from other sources: observational evidence from Southern California

Rosana Aguilera et al.

Summary: Wildfires are becoming more frequent and destructive due to climate change, with PM2.5 in wildfire smoke adversely impacting human health. Recent studies suggest wildfire PM2.5 may be more toxic than other sources of PM2.5. Adjusting air quality policies to consider the variability in PM2.5 impacts from different emission sources is essential.
