Effect of tantalum addition method on microstructure and mechanical properties of the 90(W-20Ta)-Ni-Fe alloy

Yong Zhang et al.

Summary: The method of adding initial elements significantly affects the structure and mechanical properties of tungsten alloy. In this study, the 90(W-20Ta)-Ni-Fe alloy was prepared using direct addition of elements and W-Ta pre-alloying. The diffusion of elements and phase transformation behavior under different conditions were discussed. It was found that direct addition of tantalum led to the deterioration of alloy structure, while W-Ta pre-alloying improved both the uniformity and strength of the alloy.

Densification behavior of tungsten alloy powders during hot isostatic pressing

Biao Hu et al.

Summary: The Shima yielding criterion was used to simulate the densification behavior of 93 W-Ni-Fe alloy during HIP process. The densification process of tungsten alloy powders was found to consist of expansion, shrinking, and uniform densification stages. The relative density increased by 2.3% with a temperature increase of 100 degrees Celsius.

Summary: Laser additive manufacturing (LAM) provides a feasible route for machining complex tungsten alloy parts. In this study, high-density and defect-free tungsten alloy specimens were obtained using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The microstructure and strengthening mechanisms of the LPBFed tungsten alloy were investigated, and the alloy exhibited high tensile strength.

Influence of hot isostatic pressing on microstructure, properties and deformability of selective laser melting TC4 alloy

Tai-qi Yan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of different hot isostatic pressing regimes on the properties of TC4 alloy fabricated by selective laser melting technology. Results showed that the phase constitution and microstructure of the alloy changed after hot isostatic pressing, leading to a decrease in strength and hardness but an increase in ductility. The optimal hot isostatic pressing regime was found to be 940 degrees C/3 h/150 MPa, achieving a tensile strength of approximately 890 MPa and an elongation of around 14.0%.

Consolidation and properties of tungsten by spark plasma sintering and hot isostatic pressing

Jong Min Byun et al.

Summary: The study attempted to fabricate dense tungsten using a combination process of spark plasma sintering and hot isostatic pressing, achieving an improvement in relative density and higher strength. X-ray diffractometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the specimens were mainly composed of tungsten with trace amounts of metallic tungsten bound with oxygen. The strength testing showed promising results with biaxial bending test.

Fine tungsten precipitates in the matrix phase and their influence on the mechanical properties of a tungsten heavy alloy

G. Prabhu et al.

Summary: Post-sintering cyclic heat treatment of W-Ni-Co alloys leads to the formation of fine tungsten precipitates in the matrix, with the volume fraction of precipitates increasing with the number of heat treatment cycles. This study investigates the influence of increasing precipitate fraction on the mechanical properties of 92W-5Ni-3Co alloy through varying the number of heat treatment cycles and cooling rates to prevent the re-formation of brittle intermetallic phase. The potential of W-Ni-Co alloys with fine precipitates in enhancing mechanical properties, especially in critical applications like kinetic energy penetrators, is highlighted for further improvement through thermomechanical treatments.
