Effect of Halloysite Nanotubes on Matrix Microcracking in Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Composites

M. J. Churruca et al.

Summary: Matrix microcracking is the main cause for gas permeation in linerless pressure vessels and storage tanks. The addition of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) at different concentrations enhances microcrack resistance, with a 50% increase in cracking onset stress and a 60% increase in microcrack density compared to neat epoxy at a 5% addition of HNTs. The use of a reactive diluent offsets the increase in viscosity caused by HNT incorporation.

Multiple objective optimization design of hybrid composite structures considering multiple-scale uncertainties

Xiang Peng et al.

Summary: This paper presents a multi-objective uncertainty optimization design methodology for hybrid composite structures considering multiple-scale uncertainties. The methodology involves uncertainty propagation analysis, quantification of macro material uncertainties using a neural network model, and the development of a multiple objective robust optimization design function. An adaptive nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II) method is proposed to optimize the stacking sequence and material patches simultaneously. Engineering examples demonstrate that the proposed methodology can improve vibration characteristics while maintaining low material cost.

Taguchi design-based synthesis and structural analysis of Cassia galactomannan hydroxypropyl derivative

Deepak Sharma et al.

Summary: Hydroxypropylation of Cassia gum derived from ruderal Cassia tora species was studied using Taguchi's L'16 orthogonal array design of experiments. The optimized reaction conditions resulted in maximum hydroxypropyl content of 8.43% and 7.71% as determined by chromic acid titration and 1H NMR spectroscopic analysis. COSY and HSQC correlation spectral analysis confirmed the chemical shift values of substituted hydroxypropyl groups and the presence of C 6 of the beta-D-1, 4-linkedManp unit.

Relaxed Rank Order Centroid Weighting MCDM Method With Improved Grey Relational Analysis for Subcontractor Selection: Photothermal Power Station Construction

Moses Olabhele Esangbedo et al.

Summary: This article proposes a new hybrid method and improves a classical multicriteria decision-making method for subcontractor selection in an uncertain decision-making environment. The proposed method estimates the weights of criteria using a combination of subjective and objective weighting methods. Grey relational analysis is improved by introducing both positive and negative reference alternatives. The proposed methods are applied to select a subcontractor for the supply of heliostats for photothermal power station construction, and sensitivity analysis is conducted to verify the results.

Optimization and significance of fabrication parameters on the mechanical properties of 3D printed Chitosan/PLA scaffold

Johnson Kehinde Abifarin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fabrication parameters of 3D printed chitosan/PLA scaffold and their effects on the mechanical responses. It was found that the wt% of chitosan, infill density, and annealing temperature all had an impact on the mechanical properties of the composite. By optimizing these parameters, a mechanically enhanced scaffold could be fabricated.

Atif Muhammad et al.

Summary: This research analyzed the effects of cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut, and tool coating on surface roughness and burr formation during micromachining of Inconel 718. The depth of cut was found to be the main factor affecting burr formation, while cutting velocity was the primary factor influencing surface roughness. Additionally, tool coating did not significantly impact surface roughness or burr formation.

Investigations on tool wear, surface roughness, cutting temperature, and chip formation in machining of Cu-B-CrC composites

Usame Ali Usca et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the machinability characteristics of Cu matrix reinforced by B and ceramic CrC powders during dry turning operation. The results indicate that the reinforcement ratio has the greatest impact on flank wear, surface roughness, and cutting temperatures, while cutting speed and feed rate have secondary effects on cutting temperatures and surface roughness. The deformation mechanism in the material changes with cutting initiation due to the significant impact of reinforcement ratio, suggesting a need for further exploration to measure the machinability behavior of metal matrix composites.
