Highly Transparent and Self-Healable Solar Thermal Anti-/Deicing Surfaces: When Ultrathin MXene Multilayers Marry a Solid Slippery Self-Cleaning Coating

Wenwen Niu et al.

Summary: This study presents a highly transparent and scalable solar anti-/deicing surface that can maintain high transparency of coated glass while increasing the surface temperature through photothermal conversion. The surface is made by applying ultrathin MXene multilayers and a solid omniphobic slippery coating, which enable self-cleaning and self-healing capabilities. The surface effectively prevents water from freezing and can melt pre-formed ice, while also being able to remove unfrozen water and melted ice/frost residue to improve efficiency.

Wetting behavior of selective laser melted (SLM) bio-medical grade stainless steel 316L

Suryank Dwivedi et al.

Summary: This study utilized the selective laser melting technique to fabricate biomedical grade stainless steel 316L samples and compared them with conventionally casted 316L stainless steel samples. The results demonstrated that the selective laser melted samples exhibited improved mechanical properties and wetting behavior, making them a promising approach for fabricating 316L stainless steel implants with enhanced properties.

Highly transparent liquid marble in liquid (HT-LMIL) as 3D miniaturized reactor for real-time bio-/chemical assays

Zhijian Zhao et al.

Summary: Traditional liquid marbles are liquid droplets encapsulated by hydrophobic particles, but the particles hinder optical characterization. In this study, the liquid-solid interface was manipulated using the liquid marbles in liquid strategy, in which diverse particles were used to coat the droplets immersed in organic mediums. This resulted in an optically transparent micro-reactor system with comparable transmittance to naked water droplets. Moreover, this system acted as an oil immersion lens, providing higher resolution in optical spectroscopic characterization, and allowing real-time and in situ monitoring of yeast cells' proliferation and viability. The multifaceted characteristics of this platform offer possibilities for high-throughput chemical assays in the future.

Analysis of convection heat transfer on multiscale rough superhydrophobic and liquid infused surfaces

S. Hatte et al.

Summary: This article explores multiscale rough superhydrophobic or slippery liquid infused porous surfaces and develops analytical models for convection heat transfer. It shows that multiscale non-wetting surfaces are most effective in the range of lower Reynolds number and small cylinder radius for achieving the best convective heat transfer. Contrary to prevailing notion, it also demonstrates that superhydrophobicity does not always lead to the maximum convective heat transfer performance.
