EFFECT OF DIFFERENT MIG WELDING MODES ON HARD-FACING OF INCONEL 718 ON 321 STAINLESS STEEL

Karpagaraj Anbalagan et al.

Summary: In this study, the metal inert gas (MIG) welding process was used to deposit Inconel 718 on 321 stainless steel. Different modes and parameters were tested to find the optimal MIG welding mode. The results showed that the DC-pulsed mode was qualified for making the metal deposition, and defect-free 2-mm-thick layer depositions were successfully achieved on the 321 stainless steel surfaces.

Mechanical and microstructural properties of S1100 UHSS welds obtained by EBW and MAG welding

Mustafa Tumer et al.

Summary: The study investigated the microstructures and mechanical properties of welds in 20-mm-thick S1100MC ultra high-strength steel plates under different heat input conditions. MAG welding resulted in microstructures mainly composed of acicular ferrite, while EBW welding showed microstructures mainly composed of martensite and tempered martensite. The hardness and impact toughness of the welds were influenced by the heat input, and the fracture behavior of the welds differed between MAG and EBW welding methods.

Microstructure evolution of 6252 armor steel under hypervelocity impact

H. K. Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, 6252 armor steel was used as the impact target to investigate its microstructural changes under different impact velocities. The results showed that phase transition and twinning occurred when the impact pressure exceeded a certain threshold. Ledeburite was also observed in the projectile residue under high impact pressure.

Simultaneous increase of ultimate tensile strength and uniform elongation of 30Si2MnCrMoVE ultra-high strength steel by hot deformation direct quenching and partitioning

Hai Wang et al.

Summary: The thermomechanical treatment method of deformation direct quenching and partitioning (DQ&P) was studied for improving the combination of strength and ductility of 30Si2MnCrMoVE ultra-high strength steel. The results showed that the DQ&P process significantly increased the ultimate tensile strength and uniform elongation of the steel compared to conventional quenching and tempering process. The optimal austempering temperature in the DQ&P process was found to be closely related to the content of retained austenite.

Studying the strengthening mechanisms and mechanical properties of dissimilar laser-welded butt joints of medium-Mn stainless steel and automotive high-strength carbon steel

Atef Hamada et al.

Summary: This study proposes a post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) method at a high temperature to significantly improve the mechanical performance of dissimilar laser-welded butt joints. The PWHT affects the microstructure and mechanical strength of the base metals and their weldments. The results show that the PWHT strengthens the high-strength carbon steels through interphase precipitation hardening and improves the strength-ductility balance of the medium-manganese stainless steel.

Discretization and material parameter characterization for a HAZ in direct-quenched armor steel

Riku Neuvonen et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that the ultimate load-bearing and deformation capacity of weldments from ultra-high-strength steel are affected by the heat-affected zone, necessitating analysis of its mechanical properties. A model for fracture assessment of friction-welded joints in direct-quenched armor steel was successfully developed, with the impact of subcritically heated zones on model accuracy examined. Different numerical models were tested, with neglecting the subcritical zone resulting in an overestimation of joint strength and alternative models failing to accurately assess fracture.
