Friction stir-based additive manufacturing

Rajiv S. Mishra et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing has revolutionized component manufacturing and qualification by providing opportunities for topological optimization. Friction stir additive manufacturing and additive friction stir deposition utilize intense shear deformation to create microstructures that exhibit improved mechanical properties compared to conventionally processed alloys. Optimal mechanical properties can be achieved through alloy design, although further research is needed to apply these processes to high-temperature materials.

A pseudo thermo-mechanical model linking process parameters to microstructural evolution in multilayer additive friction stir deposition of magnesium alloy

Shashank Sharma et al.

Summary: Additive friction stir deposition is a disruptive manufacturing process that allows for the deposition of multilayer materials. In this study, a finite element method-based pseudo-mechanical thermal model was developed to investigate the thermo-mechanical mechanisms and their impact on microstructural evolution. The computational predictions were in good agreement with the experimental observations, showing consistent temperature-time profiles and grain size changes.

Characterization of the fatigue behavior of additive friction stir-deposition AA2219

K. Anderson-Wedge et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the aluminum alloy AA2219 created by the solid-state additive friction stir-deposition process, determining the suitability of the as-deposited material for specific circumstances. It provides ideal process parameters for AFS-D AA2219 and characterizes the local optimal as-deposited material, laying the foundation for the technology to be used in construction of NASA's Space Launch System vehicle.

Additive friction stir deposition: a deformation processing route to metal additive manufacturing

Hang Z. Yu et al.

Summary: Additive friction stir deposition, as a counterpart to fusion-based additive processes, offers a solid-state deformation processing route for metal additive manufacturing. Its key advantages include producing fully-dense material in the printed state with fine, equiaxed microstructures, making it suitable for industries requiring high load-bearing capacity with minimal post-processing.

A meshfree computational framework for the numerical simulation of the solid -state additive manufacturing process, additive friction stir-deposition (AFS- D)

G. G. Stubblefield et al.

Summary: In this work, a fully coupled thermo-mechanical meshfree approach is developed for simulating the solid-state layer-by-layer additive manufacturing process AFS-D. The method uses a Lagrangian reference frame and solid mechanics formulation to resolve elastic and plastic strains. The simulation results are compared against experimental results for calibration, revealing temperature and strain rate gradients in the AFS-D process.

Elucidating the Effect of Additive Friction Stir Deposition on the Resulting Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Magnesium Alloy WE43

M. B. Williams et al.

Summary: The effect of processing parameters on WE43 magnesium alloy processed via Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD) was investigated. A parameterization study identified suitable parameters for bulk WE43 deposition, resulting in a refined homogenous microstructure and specific changes in mechanical properties compared to wrought material. Fatigue life in the low-cycle regime was decreased in as-deposited WE43, but comparable to wrought material in the high-cycle regime, demonstrating the potential of AFSD process for additively manufactured load-bearing components with WE43 magnesium alloy.

Effects of microstructure on tensile properties of AA2050-T84 Al-Li alloy

Ding-ding Lu et al.

Summary: The microstructure evolution of 2050 Al-Li alloy thick plate significantly affects its tensile properties, with secondary phases, precipitates, and textures varying depending on thickness location. Precipitation strengthening has a stronger influence along the rolling direction than the transverse direction, while the M-value has limited changes at different thickness layers.
