Dissimilar friction stir welding of Al to non-Al metallic materials: An overview

Sachindra Shankar et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive review of dissimilar friction stir welding (FSW) between aluminum (Al) and non-aluminum metallic materials, covering combinations such as Al-Mg, Al-Cu, Al-steel, and Al-Ti. The study concludes that FSW is an effective solution for welding dissimilar materials of Al to non-Al metals, managing challenges like the formation of intermetallic compounds, defects, and mechanical property degradation at the joint area compared to conventional dissimilar welding methods.

Friction stir welding/processing of metals and alloys: A comprehensive review on microstructural evolution

A. Heidarzadeh et al.

Summary: Friction stir welding and friction stir processing offer unique characteristics to control microstructures and improve welding and surface performance. Research focuses on developing a comprehensive understanding of microstructural evolution, with a particular emphasis on mechanisms such as grain structure and phase transformations. Special attention is given to controlling and dispersing intermetallic compounds when joining different metals and alloys.

Investigation of the microstructure, mechanical properties and fracture mechanisms of dissimilar friction stir welded aluminium/titanium joints

Taher A. Shehabeldeen et al.

Summary: The tool rotational speed significantly influences the strength and hardness of the welded joint, with lower speed resulting in higher shear strength and hardness, as well as producing a hybrid fracture surface; while higher rotational speeds tend to lead to brittle fracture mechanisms.

Effects of ultrasonic on friction stir Al-Ti welds: a comparative study

Mingrun Yu et al.

Summary: UaFSW welding produced smaller waves and larger flashes compared to conventional FSW, with an expanded stir zone and double the strength in lap shear tests. Ultrasonic assistance eliminated interfacial micro-cracks and formed a mixed zone containing Ti fragment and intermetallic precipitates.

A new method to elucidate fracture mechanism and microstructure evolution in titanium during dissimilar friction stir welding of aluminum and titanium

Amlan Kar et al.

Summary: The friction stir welding of dissimilar materials results in composite weld nuggets containing hard particles dispersed in a soft matrix. The deformation and fragmentation of high-strength material like titanium in the weld nugget can affect the properties of the weld. Understanding the complex behavior of titanium during this welding process can help in engineering composites with desired mechanical properties.

The experimental study of CFRP interlayer of dissimilar joint AA7075-T651/Ti-6Al-4V alloys by friction stir spot welding on mechanical and microstructural properties

Tauqir Nasir et al.

Summary: This study investigated the welding of AA7075-T651 and Ti-6Al-4V alloys with additional carbon fiber-reinforced polymer using friction stir spot welding. The results showed the significant effects of welding parameters and the presence of Ti3Al and Ti-Al-C intermetallic compounds on the mechanical and microstructural properties of the weld joint. The study also found that dwell time plays an important role in determining the tensile shear load of the weld joint.
