Thermal and mechanical properties of (W,Zr)B2-z coatings deposited by RF magnetron sputtering method

Tomasz Moscicki et al.

Summary: Magnetron sputtered WB2 coatings with different amounts of zirconium (8, 11, and 16 at.%) were analyzed, and it was found that the coatings had alpha-AlB2 and omega-W2B5 prototype structures. The proportion of omega-W2B5 phase increased with the increase in zirconium content. The hardness of all the coatings was around 45 GPa, while the Young's modulus slightly decreased with the increase in zirconium content. Furthermore, it was observed that the addition of zirconium improved the phase stability of the coatings.

Anisotropic super-hardness of hexagonal WB2±z thin films

C. Fuger et al.

Summary: Transition metal diboride-based thin films, with unique properties, are potential alternatives to current protective and functional coatings. This study focuses on hexagonal WB2-z, where the AlB2 structure is stabilized by sub-stoichiometric WB1.5 due to B vacancies. Experimental results show that alpha-WB2-z coatings exhibit super-hardness with anisotropy, and the mechanical properties can be tuned by crystallographic orientation relations.

Improved mechanical properties of W-Zr-B coatings deposited by hybrid RF magnetron - PLD method

Rafal Psiuk et al.

Summary: Novel W-Zr-B coatings were developed by a hybrid process, and the influence of laser power density on the structure and mechanical properties of the deposited films was studied. Addition of zirconium changed the structure of the films from columnar to amorphous.

Effect of bias voltage on the growth of super-hard (AlCrTiVZr)N high-entropy alloy nitride films synthesized by high power impulse magnetron sputtering

Yi Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of bias voltage on the characteristics of super-hard high-entropy alloy nitride films synthesized by high power impulse magnetron sputtering, finding that increasing bias voltage enhances ion bombardment, leading to improved structure and mechanical properties, ultimately achieving the highest hardness.

Effect of Voltage Pulse Width and Synchronized Substrate Bias in High-Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering of Zirconium Films

Chin-Chiuan Kuo et al.

Summary: The microstructure of Zr film is influenced by the energy of plasma species, particularly by the discharge pulse width in HiPIMS process. Increasing argon pressure and substrate biasing decreases the film growth rate, while elongating the HiPIMS pulse width alters the microstructure of films. High charged ions are found during short HiPIMS pulse width at 0.8 Pa argon, leading to changes in film structure.

Properties of Spark Plasma Sintered Compacts and Magnetron Sputtered Coatings Made from Cr, Mo, Re and Zr Alloyed Tungsten Diboride

Tomasz Moscicki et al.

Summary: By synthesizing and characterizing solid solutions, the study found that the addition of transition metal elements can reduce density, increase hardness, and enhance electrical conductivity of sintered compacts. The deposited coatings were found to be homogeneous, smooth, and high in hardness, with the W-Cr-B film exhibiting the highest hardness.

Influence of Ta on the oxidation resistance of WB2-z coatings

C. Fuger et al.

Summary: The study investigated the oxidation resistance of W1-xTaxB2-z thin films at high temperatures. Results showed that Ta alloying in WB2-z coatings can decelerate oxide scale growth and change the growth mode, leading to improved oxidation resistance.
