Self-sensing properties and piezoresistive effect of high ductility cementitious composite

Jinsheng Han et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the application of self-sensing high ductility cementitious composite (HDCC) in structural health monitoring. A carbon fiber reinforced HDCC with the addition of nano-carbon black and carbon fiber was designed and tested under compression and tension conditions. The experimental results analyze the sensing properties and piezoresistive effect of the proposed HDCC. The findings suggest that the HDCC has high ultimate tensile strain and good electrical sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio when the water-binder ratio is 0.3.

Electrical resistance and capacitance responses of smart ultra-high performance concrete with compressive strain by DC and AC measurements

Yu-yu Hou et al.

Summary: In this study, the electrical properties and strain self-sensing ability of smart ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) with different steel fiber concentrations were characterized. The results showed that AC resistance measurement is preferable for strain self-sensing in UHPC. The addition of steel fibers effectively improved the sensitivity of AC resistance and capacitance variation with strain.

Characterizing the influencing factors in a novel repairing material for concrete structures by AC impedance spectroscopy

Cong Ma et al.

Summary: This research systematically characterizes the working mechanism of various influencing factors in magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) using AC impedance spectroscopy (ACIS) for non-destructive testing. The results show that the M/P ratio significantly affects the hydration of MPC, with a higher ratio resulting in a faster hydration rate initially but a lower strength growth potential later on. The commonly used borax and STP have different influences in MPC, with borax retarding the acid-based reaction and STP improving the hydration process. The mineral admixtures, fly ash (FA) and silica fume (SF), reduce the early age properties of MPC but decrease porosity and optimize pore size distribution as hydration continues. ACIS detects that MPC has higher early strength, faster strength increasing rate, and finer pore size distribution compared to other cement-based materials. These findings are important for improving the performance of this novel repairing material for hydraulic concrete structures.

Summary: This article reviews the factors reflecting the sources of measurement errors of AC impedance spectroscopy (ACIS) of cement based materials and the data interpretation. It also recommends reduction measures and correction methods to minimize the measurement errors. The article finds that the Maxwell model is the most appropriate for describing the AC electrical response of cement based materials, considering the different responses of multi scale unconnected pores.

Summary: Graphene nanomaterials show great potential in smart ultra-highperformance fiber-reinforced concrete preparation, but research on the piezoresistive behavior of few-layer graphene (FLG) reinforced UHPFRC is limited. This study investigated the mechanical, electrical and mechanical-electrical behavior of FLG/UHPFRC composites, revealing distinct piezoresistive behavior due to the coupling effect of interfaces and microcracks.

AC impedance spectroscopy (AC-IS) analysis to characterize the effect of nanomaterials in cement-based mortars

G. F. da Silva et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the electrical properties of cement mortar with graphene oxide (GO) and nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) using an equivalent impedance circuit. The results showed that the addition of nanomaterials affected the electrical resistance of the high-frequency arc and matrix porosity, which in turn influenced compressive strength. The findings suggest that impedance spectroscopy is a useful tool for monitoring the curing process and microstructure evolution of cementitious composites with nanoreinforcements.

Summary: The study successfully developed a self-sensing high ductility cementitious composite by adding carbon fibers. The material's conductivity decreases with curing age when CF content is below the percolation threshold, but increases with moisture content and temperature. When CF content is above the percolation threshold, electronic conduction dominates the conductive behavior.
