Hydrogen embrittlement mechanisms in advanced high strength steel

Peng Gong et al.

Summary: Hydrogen embrittlement is increasingly important in advanced high strength steels as strength levels increase. This study provides a detailed understanding of the embrittling mechanism in model AHHS steels and reveals significant differences in hydrogen trapping behavior between different steel compositions. The effects of hydrogen on strength and ductility are investigated through various tests, showing a loss in strength and ductility for both steel compositions.

A novel approach for quantifying hydrogen embrittlement using side-grooved CT samples

Simon Laliberte-Riverin et al.

Summary: In this article, a novel method for measuring the stress intensity threshold for hydrogen embrittlement (K-th) in industrial plating conditions was developed. The method involved plating side-grooved CT samples in industrial plating baths and measuring K-th using an incremental step loading methodology. The method was validated with a benchmark case and used on a test case to quantify hydrogen embrittlement. The study concluded that delaying the post-plating bake did not cause hydrogen embrittlement in the studied conditions. The presence of side grooves on CT samples increased the sensitivity to hydrogen embrittlement compared to smooth samples.

On the effects of texture and microstructure on hydrogen transport towards notch tips: A CPFE study

Alireza Tondro et al.

Summary: Hydrogen embrittlement is an important degradation mechanism affecting the lifetime of engineering components. This study used a coupled diffusion-crystal plasticity finite element approach to comprehensively study the redistribution of hydrogen atoms in zirconium polycrystals near service-induced flaws. The effects of texture, grain size, and notch tip geometry on the concentration of hydrogen atoms in the lattice sites were investigated.

Combined thermal desorption spectroscopy, hydrogen visualization, HRTEM and EBSD investigation of a Ni-Fe-Cr alloy: The role of hydrogen trapping behavior in hydrogen-assisted fracture

Masoud Moshtaghi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the hydrogen trapping behavior in hydrogen-assisted cracking in a Ni-Fe-Cr alloy using various characterization methods. The results showed that hydrogen is trapped at interstitial lattice sites, dislocations, and vacancies. The reversible trapping of hydrogen at dislocations, including misfit dislocations and deformation-induced dislocations, was observed for the first time. The findings also indicated that delta phase precipitation exacerbates the hydrogen embrittlement sensitivity.
