Hydroxyl Ethyl Starch (HES) Preserves Intrarenal Microcirculatory Perfusion Shown by Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound (Ceus), and Renal Function in a Severe Hemodilution Model in Pigs

Bulent Ergin et al.

Summary: Acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH) is a perioperative procedure that aims to supplement blood volume but can cause renal injury. This study examined the use of hydroxyl ethyl starch (HES) for ANH in pigs and found that it can maintain renal blood volume, perfusion, and function within a certain range (less than 15%), although severe low blood volume (10%) may lead to renal injury.

Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin (NGAL) and cystatin C are early biomarkers of acute kidney injury associated with cardiac surgery

Anne Cecilie K. Larstorp et al.

Summary: Early diagnosis of acute kidney injury is crucial after cardiac surgery. This study compared different biomarkers and found that plasma NGAL and cystatin C can detect acute kidney injury earlier than creatinine and urea.
