Effective theory of lattice electrons strongly coupled to quantum electromagnetic fields

Jiajun Li et al.

Summary: Recent experiments have demonstrated the possibility of fabricating lattice electronic systems strongly coupled to quantum fluctuations of electromagnetic fields. In this study, researchers developed a high-frequency expansion to construct effective models for lattice electrons coupled to a continuum of off-resonant photon modes. They showed how the dispersion and topology of the electronic energy bands can be tuned by the cavity.

Intermolecular interactions in optical cavities: An ab initio QED study

Tor S. Haugland et al.

Summary: This study investigates how strong light-matter coupling can modify intermolecular forces, demonstrating the fundamental role of electron-photon correlation in describing these interactions. By tuning the electromagnetic field inside an optical cavity, ground state properties, solvent effects, and intermolecular interactions can be controlled and manipulated for molecules and materials.

Photon Condensation and Enhanced Magnetism in Cavity QED

Juan Roman-Roche et al.

Summary: A system of magnetic molecules coupled to microwave cavities undergoes the equilibrium superradiant phase transition, which is experimentally observable. The coupling effect is illustrated by the vacuum-induced ferromagnetic order in a quantum Ising model and the modification of the magnetic phase diagram of Fe-8 dipolar crystals, showcasing the cooperation between intrinsic and photon-induced spin-spin interactions. Finally, a transmission experiment demonstrates the quantum electrodynamical control of magnetism in resolving the transition.

Vacuum anomalous Hall effect in gyrotropic cavity

I. V. Tokatly et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the ground state of an electron gas embedded in a quantum gyrotropic cavity, revealing nontrivial topology of the many-body electron-photon wave function with a nonzero Berry curvature. This leads to phenomena such as the anomalous Hall effect and equilibrium edge/surface currents, as well as orbital magnetization induced by vacuum fluctuations. Notably, closed analytical expressions for the anomalous Hall conductivity and macroscopic magnetization are derived for the interacting many-body case.

Gauge freedom, quantum measurements, and time-dependent interactions in cavity QED

Alessio Settineri et al.

Summary: The interaction between quantized electromagnetic fields in cavities and natural or artificial atoms is crucial for the development of our understanding of light-matter interactions and quantum technologies. Exploring new ultrastrong coupling regimes challenges our understanding of cavity QED and is important for designing next-generation quantum devices.

Gauge fixing for strongly correlated electrons coupled to quantum light

Olesia Dmytruk et al.

Summary: The paper discusses the problem of gauge fixing for strongly correlated electrons coupled to quantum light and presents a general approach to write down a quantum light-matter Hamiltonian in dipole or Coulomb gauge. It shows the unique structures of the dipole and Coulomb gauge Hamiltonians and their connection to the Peierls approximation, with an application to a two-orbital model. The results highlight the importance of treating the nonlinear light-matter interaction nonperturbatively to ensure gauge equivalence and obtain a well-defined ultrastrong coupling limit.
